In this educative and informative write-up, efforts will be made to share rich experiences and practical steps students can use to prepare or improve on their preparation strategy with the help of teachers and parents.
1. Learning is one sure way to prepare for the BECE but doing it the right way in the correct learning environment is very helpful. A clean relaxing and quiet place is advised. Things like your phone, computers, music and television should be put off and away unless they will aid your learning.
2. Have a personal learning timetable for every week. For each week’s timetable know the topic you intend to learn and indicate it for every subject. Many learners have timetables with subjects but not topics and so when it is time to learn they keep wondering as to what to learn.
3. When preparing, don’t avoid topics you feel are difficult or subjects you think are giving you tough time. learn them and allocate more time to such subjects or topics. Seek for help on such subjects from teachers and good students. Challenge your self, be confident, stop sayings I can not do it or learn it and learn in bits.
4. Teach others what you have learned. Teaching your colleagues what you learnt helps you retain more knowledge than you would have without sharing. Teaching them helps you easily recollect and re teach self. It helps revise and retain knowledge.
5. Practice what is done in the examination. In every exam just like the BECE, candidates are expected to recall, rewrite or provide answers. In the BECE, answers are written, calculation are made, parts are labeled and the like.

Hence when preparing , do the same, don’t read maths, solve questions from simple to complex ones. In Social Studies for instance, read , retain and recall by writing the answers. By doing this with everyone of the nine subjects, you are actually training your self towards the examination. Do not just read content, practice by doing what you will be required to do in the exams.
6. Solve past questions and likely examination questions. Each time you solve a question, let the teacher teaching the subject take a look it. Inputs and suggestions by teachers help you know the progress you are making and how to improve or sustain your efforts.
7. Have revision sessions and try as much as possible to spend not more than 45 minutes per revision session. A ten (10) minutes break is recommended. Revisions are best done in the early hours of the morning when your energy level is more refreshed. Students can also learn in the evening. For this to be effective have enough sleep ahead of it. Going to bed early can help achieve this or haven a nap is advised as well. Reward your self with regular breaks.
8. Start your revision preparations early and dont pile up notes. Sometimes learn in groups and set membership rules. Share sections of a topic to be discussed among members ahead and permit every member to contribute to discussions. You can invite a teacher to a one hour after school discussion on a topic by the group.
