COVID-19: Private universities likely to shutdown due to delayed reopening
Private universities operating in Ghana are feeling the impact of COVID-19 and are likely to shut down. They are feeling the impact of COVID-19 and the delay in reopening schools.
They called on the government through and the delay in reopening schools. They called on the government through The Association of Private Universities, requesting the government to come to their aid before their institution’s collapsed.
Prof Daniel Bediako who is The Vice-Chairman of the Association in a crunch meeting with Ghana’s Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia petitioned the Akufo-Addo led government to address their concerns by putting measures in place.
The Vice President of the Association who doubles as the Vice-Chancellor of The Valley View University (VVU) Vice-Chancellor disclosed that , “Private universities solely depend on students fees to survive and most of these institutions I can say; over 90 percent of them are really struggling.”

Private universities shut down and impact
He added that his institution alone employs some 800 staff who support at least 800 families and that failure to reopen for academic work, he will not know what to tell his workers.
‘Valley View University for example employs over 800 workers which means that we support over 800 families. Should we continue not to reopen, I don’t know what to tell my workers. If I want them to go home, they will blame me and someone else. So we are actually on our knees.” He said.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called on the Finance Ministry to draw up a programme aimed to alleviate the plight of the private schools. He added that the government would engage private school owners on the issue very soon.
“I think that there is going to be a discussion, to see how to cushion our private schools.”
“The President has already given a directive to the minster to take a look at how we can cushion our private schools and I think some funding is being made available in that direction,” he said.

When government disclosed that pre-tertiary schools from KG to JHS1 and SHS1 would not reopen school until January 2021, The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) petitioned the Akufo-Addo led the government to support private schools and teachers who as a result of the global pandemic are suffering.
However, not much has been heard about actions taken by the government.
