Africa Education Watch calls for review of Free SHS policy
A civil society group, Africa Education Watch, in line with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has petitioned the Government of Ghana to consider a review of Free SHS policy.
The Executive Director of the Watch who made the call said it is impossible for any government to singlehandedly finance Secondary education for the rich and poor, and achieve sustained, positive, wholistic outcomes in the entire education system.
According to Mr Kofi Asare, education is not only a collective responsibility involving parents, communities, teachers and government but also one that is economic in principle.
He further said it is a step in the wrong direction for a government to fully finance secondary education without under-financing the basic as it stands in Ghana now, hence the need to allow PTA’s to support the programme
“One cannot ‘fully’ finance secondary without under-financing basic, as the case is in Ghana today. So please, GoG, allow PTAs to support, so you can free some resources to basic”, he urged on social media.
The President of CHASS, Alhaji Yakub Abubakar speaking to delegates at the 58th annual Conference of CHASS called on the Akufo-Addo government to review the 3-year-old Free SHS policy to address its challenges.
According to him, the negative comments passed on by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other pressure groups about the Free Senior High School policy calls for an urgent review of the implementation.
