Are Teachers Their Own Enemies? Teacher Kwadwo’s Head on the Chopping Board
Are Teachers Their Own Enemies? Ghanaian comedian and professional Teacher, Michael Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Teacher Kwadwo, during his recent interview about five days ago with ZionFelix.net. He revealed his monthly salary that is around 1,500Ȼ and some coins to Ghanaians and the world in general. My questions are: do Teachers respect their own profession? How can the society respect Teachers? Do those who even earn lesser than Teachers reveal their salary in public? It will be difficult for Teachers to progress because they are their own enemies.

Are Teachers Their Own Enemies?
One “kelvin Roger” commented on one of my articles that “grown up Teachers discuss their salaries and increment in trotro (public transport). So, no wonder Teacher’s allowances, increments and salaries are all over social media, displaying before their students. Why won’t politicians take us for granted? Why won’t Teachers be disrespected in the society?
We can hear it. Any time anybody complains about Teacher’s pay, better work condition, some of them like Teacher Kwadwo will intervene by saying, “Well, I’m not in it for money. What matters to me is passion”. Don’t get me wrong. But when someone says, “I’m in the teaching no because of the money,” indirectly, you imply that maybe the rest of Teachers who are claiming higher salary are mercenaries who became Teachers in the search of good work condition and attractive salary in teaching.
I don’t know all the fact, but there are some people who went into teaching because they thought it would be an easy way to earn a decent living with an amazing schedule, holidays and vacations. Some too, are into teaching temporarily for a better job offer. After all, teaching is a transition job for most people. Teaching can be a “last option” profession because, even if nobody else will hire you, a school will probably take you out of desperation. On the other hand, most of us became Teachers because we love teaching. Because we feel called to teach and at least in my case, can’t imagine any other job bringing us the joy we find in the classroom.
How does the most noble profession in the world, continue to pay their Teachers a salary that could barely support a family of two, let alone a family of four? The fact is, there are places where good and passionate Teachers cannot afford to be teachers because it won’t pay the rent. That’s why under performance in our educational system persists.
We should stop being our own worst enemies
You don’t care about the money? That’s great. Maybe you’re married to somebody who’s ok financially. Maybe you live in the family house. Maybe you don’t have kids in school. Maybe you have other source of income. Either way, it’s great that you can make it work on a small salary and I’ve no problem with that.
My point is, don’t look down on those who can’t. Most Teachers love teaching…but we also love being able to buy foodstuffs, afford rent and have a decent living such as other professionals. Teaching is an outstanding job; let’s insist that our leaders treat it that way. Indeed, we need to have a plan to fight for what’s rightfully ours (better work conditions, higher pay, societal respect etc.) and to support our fellow Teachers.
