8 Avoidable Exams Mistakes for BECE candidates are discussed below
Avoidable Mistakes
1. Don’t talk with a colleague during the examination. The WAEC frowns on students communicating with other candidates during the conduct of the examination. All candidates are expected to do independent work. Trying to talk to other BECE candidates in the examination hall can create problems for the student and others. Teachers should be able to share these exam tips with their candidates these whiles invigilators should not permit it as it can lead all forms of examination misconducts.
2. Not reading the questions to understand before answering.
The temptation to answer questions as soon as the bell goes to start work can create problems sometimes. Instead of rushing to answer the question only to find out you have deviated or can not answer the question well, take your time to read through the questions and choose wisely. Understand the question before you answer them. Providing the wrong answers and cancelling them is time-wasting and can be very frustrating.
3. You can skip questions but don’t skip papers.
You can skip questions that you can not answer. For instance, if you can answer question 1a, 1b and 1d but not 1c, you can kip the 1c but do not leave a blank page in between the final answer to question 1 and the start of question 2. The examiner marking your script after the examination may think you stopped working after question one due to the blank page you left. This is one of the avoidable exams mistake candidates repeat often in examinations.
4.Not labelling all answers the correct way.
Some students forget to number answers or number them wrongly. If you number quest 1A’s answer as 1d, the examiner may often mark the answers you provided using the Q1d’s answers. This means your answers provided as technically wrong. Always cross-check the numbering of your answers with the questions to make sure you have done the right numbering. Teachers should always remind their candidates each time they are ready to enter the examination hall for every paper. These avoidable exams mistake if not checked can make a candidate lose marks.
5. Answer every new question on a new page.
The BECE and WAEC have enough additional paper for each student who may need it. Do not start let say the answers for Q3 on the same page you answered the last question. Always start on a new or fresh page. If you need more paper, just raise your hand, when the invigilator comes to you, inform him /her and the additional paper will be supplied. Ask for an additional paper if you cancel some answers and got some sheets in your answer booklet wasted. Don’t be shy. Take note: Do not answer two questions on the same page. Do not repeat this and other avoidable exams mistake discussed here.
6. Cross out clearly answers you think it is an error or mistake. Students make mistakes in the examination, others deviate and realise it, some spell words wrong and construct wrong sentences. Any time you do any of these in the exams, carefully cross out by ruling one line through the word or sentence. In case you are cancelling a who page or paragraph, use one line to cross through nicely. Do not paint the page or make it look nasty.
7. Label carefully.
If an answer demands that you sketch or draw to scale, provide a neat work. Do not over-erase to make the work you are presenting dirty. Make sure when labelling, the lines you are using to label do not cross into each other.
8. Read through your work – Another avoidable mistake by smart students is making sure you read through your work. This helps correct as many grammatical errors as possible. It further helps the candidate to fill in the gaps in answers to save marks. Always review your answers if there is time.
SMART 2020 BECE students and their teachers are encouraged to follow these basic examination tips to increase the chances of success in the examination. We hope you have taken note of the avoidable exams mistake explained here.
