Believe it or not, many parents will be sending their children back to school by the end of December 2020, and many more will be returning to the classroom in January 2021. But in the age of COVID-19, parents and their students will both have to get used to a new routine. Here are a few key rules to keep in mind as you send your young ones back to school.
COVID-19 and school reopening advice 1: Don’t Send Your Child To School Sick
In pre-COVID times, it may have been practical to send your child off to school even if they felt a little under the weather. A tablespoon of Tylenol and by lunchtime, your student would feel fine. But as the pandemic continues, it won’t be as easy. If your child is showing any symptoms, the best thing to do is keep them home. But that doesn’t mean they will necessarily miss out on instruction. Since most schools are applying a hybrid model (part-time classroom instruction, part-time virtual), you should be able to keep your student up-to-date online, if they miss several days of school. You should also consider checking their temperature every morning, just to be certain.

COVID-19 and school reopening advise 2: Bring Your Own School Supplies
Sharing pens, pencils, and highlighters was once innocuous enough, but not amid a contagious pandemic. Unfortunately, if your student isn’t full-equipped, they won’t be able to ask a peer for a spare writing implement. But if you are concerned about the expense, consider buying in bulk with a few of your neighbors. That way you can be sure to have pens and pencils on hand as the year goes on.
COVID-19 and school reopening advice 3: Pack Hand Sanitizer
Most of us know by now that it is essential to keep the hands clean since humans tend to touch their faces an average of 16 times per hour. While washing with soap and water is sufficient, ensuring that your student has hand sanitizer in their backpack will help them on the school bus or in the classroom, where a sink might not be convenient. School reopening advice 4: Have a Supply of Masks on Hand
Facial masks are a new, but an integral addition to the back-to-school list and the January school reopening will need a more concerted effort to instill this new discipline in schools. Be sure your student has two or three extra masks in their backpack, just in case theirs snaps or gets dirty throughout the day. Additionally, have your child practice wearing their mask now before the school year begins. Masks can take a little getting used to, so you don’t want the first day of school to be the first time your kid ever experiences a face covering.
Create a Back-from-School Routine
January school reopening and coming back from class will also be different this year. Create a routine around returning from school, that includes taking off shoes and washing hands. It doesn’t have to be a huge list of cleansing tasks, as long as it includes these key steps. Creating a routine will help your kids form a habit, so as the school year passes, they know exactly what to do when they get back to the house. Most of All, Stay Positive!
Remember, we are living in a historic moment, and parents and children alike are still trying to get used to the changes. Accidents will happen, as they always do. But getting bent out of shape will just make things worse. Try your best, but if you mess up, that’s okay. We’re all trying to master this new reality, one day at a time. Parents, teachers, school children, government, and all stakeholders must guide and guard against any attempt to relax the protocols when school reopens in January 2021. Its is our collective responsibility to protect each one and ourselves.
