Nigeria pulled out of the ongoing 2020 WASSCE at the last hour citing its COVID-19 protection policies aimed at protecting the lives of its students.
The decision sparked mass protests right from within the government to the general public.
The U-turn by the government and the Education Ministry against its previous decision was greeted with excitement from students who had been frustrated by the earlier decision of the government.
The Nigerian House of Representatives called on the federal government of Nigeria to quash its decision to back out of the 2020 WASSCE. The leadership of the Nigerian Education Ministry has been speaking on the new development.
Mr. Ben Bem Goong, The Federal Ministry Of Education has revealed that
“Stakeholders at the meeting agreed that the exit classes should resume immediately after the Sallah break, from the 4th of August, 2020 to enable them to prepare for the WAEC examinations scheduled to commence from the 17th of August, 2020.
“The meeting also resolved that a passionate appeal be made to the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and public-spirited Nigerians for assistance to schools across the country to enable them to fast track the preparations of safe reopening, as agreed.
“Another meeting is to be convened tomorrow between the Federal Ministry of Education and Chief Executives of examination bodies namely, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS to harmonize their examination dates, which will be conveyed to stakeholders expeditiously by the Federal Ministry of Education.”
Students are waiting patiently for the new examination time table and other directives ahead of the WASSCE which begins in barely 2 weeks for the Nigerian Exit classes.
