‘Degreelisation” of the teaching profession – How Diploma holding teachers can remain relevant in 2022
How to remain relevant as a Teacher with a Diploma in Education in the 2022/2023 Academic year is the biggest headache of teachers in this category.
It can take 8-15 years before full ‘degreelisation” is attained unless the GES and the MoE decide to speed up the process by allocating a shorter period within which those with Diploma must upgrade. This option in itself can create a shortage of teachers in public basic schools if there is a mad rush for degrees by teachers without any regulations.
Gradually professional teachers’ basic qualification has moved from Certificate A to Diploma and is heading to Degree as the basic qualification for professional teachers in Ghana.

In 2004 the current Diploma was introduced which helped sett the pace for the minimum teaching qualification. 16 years on, there are still teachers within the Ghana Education Service who are stuck at their teacher Cert A qualification. This is a true indication that policies take time to be realized when setting into motion as a strategic change and strategic goals spanning several years.
Per the new education reforms by the government, all professional teachers without degrees will be out of the system when the 2022/2023 academic year takes effect two years from now.
Whiles this information from the managers of education in Ghana may be disheartening for Diploma holding teachers, it is also misleading.
The fact of the matter is that the first batch of degree holders from the various colleges of education will graduate in 2022. This would mean that Colleges of Education will award the last set of Diplomas to 2021 graduates. However, these last batch of Diploma holding teachers and their colleagues employed by the GES may become obsolete by 2022/2023 academic year without ample time between graduation, national service, and the time for upgrading.
To stay afloat, it is important that all teachers with diploma certificates upgrade themselves. Opting for a study leave with pay, one should be able to do a top-up programme to earn a relevant degree.
However, the GES study leave with pay often comes with specified programs, and if a teacher with a Diploma is denied the chance to further his or her study, who would be blamed?
The new education reform will create large samples of degree teachers in 2023 for recruitment and selection from the CoE. Understandably, Diploma in-service teachers are required to upgrade to sync with curriculum reforms and teacher quality expectations, but these progressive steps are not achieved in a vacuum.
It is however not anticipated that teachers with Diploma will be forced out of the service in 2022 but systems and options for teachers to attain the minimum requirement is expected to be rolled out as part of the human resource development agenda of the Ghana Education Service. For instance, a One-year top-up course for in-service teachers (with a diploma) to earn a degree (with three-tier specialization levels) may be a laudable idea.
