The Ghana Education Ministry has praised the Free SHS policy of the government for bringing to an end the aggregate 30 cut-off point which was used for admission into Senior High School.
It said the introduction of the policy in 2017 had helped thousands of students who would have stayed home because they could not meet the cutoff point of aggregate 30, the required grade of entry into SHS set by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Since the Free SHS was introduced the government had resorted to the use of raw scores for placing candidates in respective Senior High Schools across the country after every BECE.

The pronouncement of the MoE comes to counter a statement signed by Mr. Felix Baidoo, in which Professor Sampson Obed Appiah, a University of Ghana lecturer, called the double-track system the most disastrous policy in Ghana’s history of education.

The removal of the cut-off point and the introduction of the Free SHS has led to increased enrolment in Senior High Schools. However, the Free SHS raw score approach to enrolling students into secondary school does not permit candidates who score grade 9 in Mathematics or Science to gain admission unless such students resit the BECE as private candidates and pass.
