Gov’t to pay teachers legacy arrears by end of 2020 - NAPO

The Education Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has hinted the government by the end of this year will duly settle all teachers who have not received their legacy arrears

The Education Minister gave this assurance speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize 2020 ceremony held at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh noted the Akufo-Addo government even though was not under any agreement to provide teachers with legacy arrears but after due consideration, it has accepted to pay what is due them.

“It was not an obligation but a gesture to show teachers that the government still had them at heart. We work closely with the union leaders so those who have not been paid should work closely with their leaders and they will be paid before the end of the year,” NAPO stated.

Commenting on claims the government has neglected university graduates, the Manhyia South MP said that is not the case, according to him, the government is dedicated to employing graduates who have passed teacher licensure exams and completed the one year mandatory National Service

“Government is not necessarily interested in not employing diploma graduates, we have employed each and everyone who has passed the licensure exams and have finished their national service will be automatically employed.”

He furthered that his outfit in collaboration with the teacher unions and the National Teaching Council are working hand in hand to ensure that all teachers are paid their legacy arrears by the end of December 31, 2020.
