How teachers can help candidates pass their examination
Every dedicated teacher can help his or her class or candidates pass their examination if the right approach, strategies and revision systems are put in place.
There is no rewarding experience for teachers than to see students very excited after an exams paper. That feeling is difficult to even explain if the results are released and your student so do well.
How teachers can help candidates pass their examination goes beyond teaching the entire syllabus.
A good performance by students is often the end product of a good teachers input through out the learning stage, preparation and the examination. A good performance in an exams often shows a good understanding of the subject by students.
Thus teachers need to provide students or their candidates with the needed support during their preparation for the examination to help achieve exams success the easy way.
Teachers themselves have passed, failed and prepared for examinations and know by experience and practice how they can help learners repeat success strategies and avoid failure and mistakes they themselves might have made in the past.
In this educative write-up, How teachers can help candidates pass their examination, some critical steps will be explored to better teachers to help students preparing for examinations.
#1 Review the Chief Examiners Report and apply findings in your lessons and revisions. This helps the teacher know the strength and weaknesses identified and suggestions offered based on the previous examination. If you are preparing candidates for an examination such as WASSCE or BECE and you don’t have the latest Chief Examiners Report, get one after reading this article. This document can help you support your learners to avoid making the same common mistakes that students usually make in the exams for the subject (s) you teach.

#2 Understand the requirements of questions and transfer that knowledge to the learner. This is one way by which teachers can empower their students. There should be instances where assignments given do not require the answers questions but to provide hints of the expected solution or how the question is to be attempted. There are students who perform poorly because they do not know how to attempt a given question. For example, Write a letter to your friend in a war-torn country explaining three dangers you fear he or she might be facing.
- Candidates can be asked to indicate the things they will put in place in such an essay.
- Knowing the type of letter
- How to write the address and date (Heading)
- Salutation/Greeting with a comma (Dear Kojo,)
- Introduction – example
- Three points to be raised and why
- Concluding paragraph
- The appropriate subscription /complimentary close (ie Yours affectionately,)
An activity like this ahead a class exercise or giving students past questions to do this helps them build better understanding and learn the basic rudiments. This approach works well with preparations in every subject.
Helping students to identify (key words in questions, the topic the question is picked from and the requirements) helps put students in the right frame of mind to answer a similar question or to apply a similar approach in the examination to increase their chances of success. Using this method helps the teacher to verify if students understanding is correct or not.
#3 Help your candidates to apply what they have learnt. It is one sure way students preparing for an examination can recall what they have been taught. The is a concept in teaching that says ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand’. Don’t let your lessons concentrate on the first part but rather, go through the three phases in your small way. During a revision class, the strategy is to help students deal with unclear sections and to confirm their understanding. If students still have difficulties, attempt to ask a colleague student to explain it to the class. This also helps since some students get some explanations better when they come from their colleagues. Helping learners to apply their learning, and abstract concepts makes them concrete which increases their ability to retain the concepts.
#4 Make the revision less tense and the learning environment friendly. Use revision games, help group information on topics and sections into fact, concept, process, procedure and principle. It helps to further break the lesson into subsections different from what was thought earlier. Have quizzes in groups and on individual basis.

#5 Stop teaching and also allow students to teach or lead discussions. This requires giving students reading assignments and asking them to share the knowledge with colleagues. it is one of the best ways to ensure student read the topic to be revised before coming for the revision class. Such discussions allow learners to articulate their understanding, clarify their doubts and bring forth their weaknesses. It offers the teacher a great opportunity to then clear the doubts, misconceptions and explain concepts not well understood by learners. Permitting learners to lead such learning activities encourages collaborative learning, teachers and students build a strong bond as well.
#6 Use Mind Maps to teach instead of always numbering points on the board and giving lengthy notes. In addition, provide an opportunity for learners to predict likely examination questions and give them the time to solve them. Discuss these questions with students and guide them to appreciate the requirements of the question or use the point 2 discussed in this educative write up.
#7 Every teacher has been a student before hence share your experiences and your fears of the past when you were preparing for examination and what you did to deal with it. The truth is many candidates go through emotional challenges and stress while preparing for an exams. Sharing your story can bring so much relieve, build confidence and self believe.
These strategies are not exhaustive but they are worth adding to your personal strategies to help your candidates prepare for the impending examination. I used them, still use them and they work for my students. They may work for you as well.
