I Was Working In Enemy Territory And In A Toxic Environment- Former Auditor General Domelovo
In an interview, former Auditor General Daniel Domelovo said he was relieved to be out of a job after being fired by President Akufo-Addo. He went on to say that he considered his workplace “toxic” since he feared for his safety there.
Domelovo said in an interview that he felt uncomfortable at work and had to be careful about what he ate, drank, and even who he talked to.
His comments were made in reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn President Akufo-Addo’s order to go on leave. He feels vindicated by the Supreme Court’s ruling that President Akufo-Addo’s order compelling him to take leave was unconstitutional.
He has reiterated his stance on the issue in light of the court’s unanimous decision. Although some have questioned the Supreme Court’s two-year delay in reaching this verdict, Domelovo defended it as good.
During an interview, he defended the legitimacy of the court’s ruling. I was right all along. They are in the best position to explain why they have been unable to make or have postponed this choice. According to him, morale at work was quite low. It was difficult to choose what to drink, eat, or even talk to someone about. Because of my apprehension, I came to dread these occurrences. I was worried that I would be doing work in hostile terrain. I was wary because I believed I was on enemy territory. I was relieved and felt safe after being evicted, even if the court’s decision was delayed.
There were a lot of people out to get me. My board chairman represented Yaw Osafo Marfo in court throughout the Kroll and Associates case. Can you imagine if the chair of your board went to bat for someone who had been surcharged in a matter and then went back to his or her seat as chair and made decisions? Therefore, I assumed I was in a hostile area and prepared accordingly.
Background
The Supreme Court ruled that the President’s order to place Daniel Domelovo on leave was unconstitutional on May 31, 2023, a Wednesday.
The court also found it unlawful for the president to select a replacement in his absence. In a case brought before it by the Center for Democratic Development and seven other NGOs, the court ruled in favor of the NGOs. After Dumelovo was forced to quit, the CSOs took the matter to court. The CSOs claimed the move was an attack on the independence of the office, so they petitioned the Supreme Court to declare the president’s conduct illegal. The president’s refusal to retract the decision after many appeals led to the lawsuit, which was filed in October 2020. After two years of deliberation, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the petitioners. Since the president does not have the authority to exercise such disciplinary control over autonomous bodies, the court ruled that the directions were invalid.Since Domelevo has since retired, the court did not make any further directions, such as preventing him from proceeding on leave. Justices Nene Amegatcher, Professor Ashie Kotey, Mariama Owusu, Lovelace Johnson, Gertrude Torkonoo, Professor Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, and Emmanuel Kulendi presided over the proceedings.
