Involve parents in virtual learning fee decisions – NIB to private schools
The National Inspectorate Board (NIB) under which is currently mandated to regulate the activities of private schools in Ghana has called on such schools and their owners to engage parents in deciding on fees to charge for virtual learning sessions.
This call comes after the government announced an extension of the closure of schools until January 2021. This directive follows reports that some private school authorities are unclear about the President’s directives on the continuation of school for the rest of the year.
According to the National Inspectorate Board, the presidential directive for the Education Ministry to roll out distance learning programmes for students are still in effect despite the reopening of schools for other levels.
The National Inspectorate Board (NIB) in a statement dated September 1, 2020, sighted by Edulearnweb.com indicated the directive still holds for virtual learning, hence private schools can conduct teaching and learning virtually for students.
This must however have inputs from parents in terms of fees and other related issues to ensure equity.

However, the National Inspectorate Board (NIB) advises all private school proprietors to engage parents to reach a consensus of fees to be charged for virtual learning.
Schools will not reopen until January 2021, and since private schools are the most affected, they may take undue advantage of parents. But, the reality on the ground is that many parents have contracted private teachers for their wards already and many more will do the same to keep their children educated for the next four months.
His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his first televised nation’s address on March 15, 2020, tasked the Ministry of Education (MoE) and communication Ministry to roll out distance learning programmes virtually.
