All roads leads to ACCRA on September. The Legacy Arrears demonstration by aggrieved teachers would come off on 30th September as agreed on by the members of the aggrieved teachers.
Per the information obtained by edulearnweb.com, the teachers numbering at least 11,000 were not paid their legacy Arrears.
Efforts to get this resolved by the Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Education and the Controller and Accountant Generals Department has proved futile.
The request by the GES for all teachers claiming not to have been paid to suit to it a set of official documents has been tagged by aggrieved teachers are frustrating and an attempt by the GES to buy time and delay the process of paying them what their are rightful due.
To send a signal strong enough, the aggrieved teachers would embark on a demonstration on 30th September to press home their demands.
In a statement by the group sighted by Edulearnweb.com the group said “Our intended Demonstration is indeed coming off. Even though the police did not respond to our expectations after notifying them, the law does not restrict us from embarking on our mission.”
Legacy Arrears demonstration and police notification
The teachers posit that they have every legal right to demonstrate with or without Police presences.
“We have every legal right to proceed either with or without the police.
That is to say that the police in this picture are only to be notified so that they will in turn provide us the needed protection.” the statement indicated
The group added that ” As a matter of fact, the police don’t give permission on matters of demonstration…we have every right to proceed without any form of restrictions. The only thing they can do is to seek for court injunction and that must be served in a period of 10 days otherwise, nothing is stopping us.”
Members of the group are expected from all the region in Accra to stage what they called a massive demonstration to demand fair treatment.
Legacy Arrears Demonstration and Conflicting Arrears
The conflicting figures from the GES and the teacher unions is a clear indication of failure of the service to keep accurate and reliable data on teachers employed over the years.
The group has called on all members to converge in Accra for the demonstration and that the demonstration is indeed coming off.
