Mahama’s private schools Free SHS promise is deceitful – Dr Adutwum
The NDC has promised to include private schools in Free SHS should the party win power in the December 7th general elections. This has attracted excitement from private schools and some other stakeholders. However, members of the ruling NPP government and party faithful believe the promise is either deceitful or unachievable.
This Manifesto promise by the Mahama led NDC in the area of education has come under serious critical scrutiny by the ruling NPP government. The latest to speak on the subject matter is Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum who is the current Deputy Education Minister in charge of Basic and Secondary Education.
In his estimation, the promise to include private schools in Free SHS deceitful. He disclosed to Adu Gyamfi Marfo on Kingdom FM monitored by Edulearweb.com the NDC can not use one year to build the necessary E-Blocks to eliminate the current double track. The NDC has also come out to indicate it would abolish the double track system.

“First of all, they said when they assume power they will use one year to build all the E-blocks in order to eliminate the double-track system. So if you build all the E-blocks what then are you going to do at the private school?”
However, the NDC said, the Free SHS would be extended to private schools. The private schools have their own infrastructure and the rolling out of such a program may end up being a Public-Private Partnership.
Dr. Adutwum questioned if the government builds all the classroom needed what business would the government have introducing the Free SHS in private schools.
“You’ve built all the classrooms that you need what else are you going to do at the private schools or is that a grand style to deceive them. If you don’t understand the private school system you might think that NDC are making some useful contribution, but that’s not actually the case.” He quizzed.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum gifted his private SHS in the Ashanti Region to the NPP led government which is being used to provide Free SHS. According to him, his school was not a money making venture, hence his decision.
He said: “I used to have a private school but it wasn’t built with the intention of making money so I have given it up to the government to take over the administration of the school. Right now it’s been named after Osei Tutu and it’s situated in the Ashanti Region,”
However, the promise has caught up with the many private schools dotted around the country who have been on the losing side since 2017 when the government rolled out the Free SHS in all public second cycle schools in Ghana.
