Natural sleep aids can help deal with your Insomnia
Melatonin
When you’re ready to sleep, your brain produces melatonin. But a lot of times, stress, or even things like jet lag, can throw off your normal melatonin production. To combat this, try melatonin drinks or tablets. You can take them an hour or 90 minutes before going to bed. Since your brain produces this neurotransmitter naturally, you won’t wake up still feeling sleepy, like you would by taking a heavier sedative. It’s also a great way to help you adjust to a new time zone!
Valerian root
Valerian root is an old remedy for light sleepers, or those with trouble falling asleep. The plant contains several chemicals that aid in sleeping by increasing the amount of GABA neurotransmitter in your brain. These are inhibitory neurotransmitters, so if stress has caused a GABA deficiency in your body, you’ll have trouble falling asleep. But the compounds in Valerian root help your brain produce more GABA, so you can get a good night’s sleep.
CBD – cannabidiol
Cannabidiol or CBD is the non-psychotropic chemical purified from the cannabis plant. It doesn’t get you high like THC, but it does have an anti-anxiety and sedative effect. Since farmers can now grow hemp with less than 0.3% THC, cannabidiol is legal across the country, and currently all the rage. You can find it in tinctures, edibles, vapes, and oils.
Magnesium
Magnesium is a necessary mineral for proper brain function. If you’re lacking magnesium in your diet, your brain might have trouble producing the necessary chemicals for good sleep. Try taking a magnesium supplement or eating foods that are high in magnesium. You might find yourself drifting off with much more ease.
Tryptophan
Tryptophan is an amino acid that eventually turns into serotonin and melatonin. It’s found in high-protein foods. It can help with sleep aid because it gives your brain cells the necessary building blocks that make the neurotransmitters that calm you down. Since amino acids are naturally found in food, tryptophan supplements are safe unless you’re taking medications that adjust your serotonin levels.
