WAEC initiates investigations into leaked exams papers, Africa Education Watch says WAEC boss must resign
WAEC in an effort to protect its integrity and that of its WASSCE 2020 exams has initiated investigations into leaked exams paper. Per its press release dated 19th August, it said Mathematics (core) 2 paper snap shots made their way out of its sound room onto the social media.
Leaked exams papers
The Core Mathematics paper seems to have been compromised as it was leaked ahead of the examination. Already stakeholders are calling for the paper to be retaken by the candidates to protect that sanctity of the exams.
Since the WASSCE certificate and or examination is losing credibility, public and tertiary education institutions must start considering the re-introduction of entrance exams for applicants before offering admission.
WAEC’s description of questions leaked as fake, which appeared in the exams need to be looked at again. The council is losing its integrity and must do its work well.
Rogue sites continue to operate by posting fake questions on social media, however they seem to be connected to workers within the WAEC who constantly act against the core values and their unprofessional conduct is causing more havoc to their employer. It also indicated that some leaked papers that flooded social media were fake.
It said courses like the Integrated Science (2 & 1), Social Studies (2 & 1), Chemistry (3) Practical Alternative A, and Economics (2 & 1) papers were shared on social media platforms.
WAEC boss must resign
In a related development, the Africa Education Watch has called on the West African Examination Council WAEC boss to resign from the post for superintending over leaked examination.
In its tweet the Education and Advocacy tink-tank said
Dear WAEC, now that you have conceded the leakages, when is your boss resigning? You cannot superintend over leakage of examiners contact details & exam papers and expect to remain in office. Kindly Resign, Madam!
In response to the alleged leakage of the WASSCE 2020 exams questions the nonprofit making examining body said it has also initiated investigations to help unravel how its yet to be finalized Examiners list for the ongoing WASSCE (SC) 2020 made it way into the public domain.
Snapshots of the Mathematics (Core) 2 Paper were posted on social media platforms after the release of the paper from WAEC Strong Rooms. Investigations into this issue are ongoing. The press release stated.
WAEC added that the Cyber Crime Department of the GPS has been informed to help in this regard.
To educate the general public on the processes through which exams scripts are marked, the examining body said it had a well tested 6 step process which ensures, that at each level, there are internal audit and script scrutiny to ensure the credibility of results are not in question.
The steps according to WAEC were
-
Exclusion of school names on script envelopes;
-
Swapping of scripts across regions;
-
Vetting of scripts marked by Assistant Examiners by Team Leaders;
-
Vetting of Team Leaders’ scripts by Chief Examiners;
-
Cross-checking of all marked scripts (Script-checking process);
-
Supervision of above-mentioned processes by Venue Co-ordinators and Subject Officers.
As to whether the leaked exams papers will be rescheduled, the investigations will inform WAEC on what to do.
