Free SHS Students Record Over 590,000 Poor WASSCE Grades In 4 Core Subjects
WASSCE 2020 results are out, but that is not the end of the story. The students produced 591,155 poor grades from D7 to F9 in the four core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies (EMSS) together.
Using percentages to analyze the results of WASSCE 2020 may not give the full information being communicated.
The data below reveals the actual number of students who passed and failed each of the four core subjects. In this analysis, D7 to F9 represents fail.
Using the WAEC data released along with the results,157,757 representing 42.66% failed the English Language, thus they scored D7 to F9. Again 126,256 (34.29%) students failed Mathematics (Core). Integrated Science was passed by 52.53% whiles some 47.47% failed. Social Studies, 131,766 (35.69%).

The students who made poor grades at the BECE (aggregate 36 to 48) and found their way to the SHS may count their losses.
Grades such as D7, E8, and F9 in any core subject will hinder students from gaining admissions into tertiary institutions in Ghana. For candidates who have made any of these poor grades in the core subjects, the NOV/DEC examination is the best second window for making amends.
The WASSCE 2020 provisional results released by WAEC showed there has been an improvement in student performance as the number of candidates who scored Grades A1 to C6 in English Language and Mathematics (Core) in 2020 increased compared to 2019.
The English Language saw an increase in the pass rate by 8.38% over the 2019 outcome of 48.96%. Mathematics (Core) recorded a 65.71% pass in 2020, which is a 2.4% improvement over the 2019 result.
However, Integrated Science and Social Studies saw a decline in the performance of candidates at Grades A1 to C6 in 2020 as compared to 2019.
2019 and 2020 comparison of Integrated Science performance showed that 63.17% which recorded in 2019 declined to 52.53% in 2020. The A1-C6 pass for Social Studies in 2019 was 75.43% but that of 2020 fell to 64.31% in 2020. Thus a decline of 11.12%.
Private and Remedial schools have a great opportunity to tap into these huge numbers and reap the full benefit that has been denied them by the introduction of the Free SHS and COVID-19.
