Private schools under free SHS: Who will pay the teachers? – Mahama asked
The Flagbearer of the main opposition party, Mr John Mahama has been asked how he intends to pay private school teachers in the country should he include private schools to the Free Senior high School (Free SHS) policy.
The Akufo-Addo led government in September 2017 introduced the Free SHS policy to enable successful BECE graduates access their secondary education in public Senior High Schools for free at no cost.
However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at their 2020 manifesto launch indicated their next government led by John Mahama will include all private schools to the Free Senior High School programme.
The Director of Political Affairs at the office of the Chief of Staff, Mr Frank Asiedu Bekoe Speaking at a meeting of the Eastern regional communication team of the NPP at Tafo in the Eastern Region quizzed the Mahama NDC government how they intend to pay private school teachers in that regard.
According to Mr Frank Asiedu Bekoe, it will be a step in the wrong direction for a central government to bear the cost of private schools, especially when such schools are making profits for themselves.
“How can you include private schools in the Free SHS policy when such businesses are operated with the sole objective of making profits? Who then pays private school teachers?”, he asked the main opposition party.
“John Mahama has ones said if he had GH¢2 billion, he would not spend it on Free SHS and he is now telling us he will include private schools. I am calling on the NDC’s presidential candidate to outline how he intends to carry out all he has promised especially because he doubted the practicability of the Free SHS policy when President AkufoAddo said he was going to implement it”, Mr Frank Asiedu Bekoe challenged.
