The teacher and the teaching profession is saddled with many challenges but the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) believes teachers should be celebrated for their selfless contributions and at the time when the COVID-19 pandemic has added significantly to the already existing problems being faced
by the country’s educational system yet the teachers continue to hold the fort to ensure students get educated.
A UNESCO statement said: “The issue of teacher leadership in relation to crisis responses is not just timely, but critical in terms of the contributions teachers have made to provide remote learning, support vulnerable populations, reopen schools, and ensure that learning gaps have been mitigated. The discussions surrounding WTD [World Teachers’ Day] will also address the role of teachers in building resilience and shaping the future of education and the teaching profession.”
IFEST called on teachers to challenge themselves in these trying times of COVID-19. “We urge the teachers to take up the challenge as an opportunity the crises have presented and come up with innovative ways such as new teaching and learning technologies to educate students without meeting them physically.” The statement said.
The statement signed by Peter Anti the Acting Executive Director called on “government to support the
teachers with the necessary resources in terms of finance and the provision of needed educational
resources and digital devices during these times to enable them to leverage technology to improve
learning outcomes.”
