~ Theodore Roosevelt
As a student, for any promotion; there must be exams, for any exams, there must be a lecture and for any lecture, there must be a lecturer. That is your starting point to prepare.
“Planning is as natural to the process of success as its absence is to the process of failure”.
For you to prepare well as a student and pass your exams, you must know how to prepare to able to succeed in life. Your preparation start from the first day you got admission and been admitted. It starts from the first day you receive a lecture in class as student. A student who went to lecture class with one notebook for the day is not ready to prepare to pass his exams.
“No tool is more beneficial than intelligence. No enemy is more harmful than ignorance”.
For you as a student to prepare well and pass your exams, you must understand the importance of the following points;
v Attending to lecture class: this will help you to know the area that your lecturer have in mind to teach you all through that section. It helps you to know the insight on what your lecturer will set during the exams. Attending a lecture class, gives you 30% sure that you want to make the best in the exams.
“I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught”.
How to prepare for success in your examination no matter what
- Copying of notes: this help you to have a preview of what the lecturer had taught you for the day. It helps you to form a note in your own words and from your own understanding. Also help you when revisions are needed. When a student does not copy his note when the lecturer is lecturing, he/she is directly saying that there is no need to pass the subject course.
“A great writer creates a world of his own and his readers are proud to live in it. A lesser writer may entice them in for a moment, but soon he will watch them filing out”.
- Listing and writing: These help you to know and understand when the lecturer makes important points that he will used as question on Quiz & Exams. Writing it down, help you to pass his quiz and exams. It helps you to have a full understanding when studying during revision period. It gives you 20% pass of the subject course.
“I have learned since to be a better student and to be ready to say to my fellow students ‘I do not know”.
- Attending to Assignment: it helps you to increase your performance and grade in result/exams. Lecturers gave out an assignment to be able to know how their students have understood what they have taught them. Most lecturers repeat their assignment during the exam. Any student, who doesn’t do his class assignment, is directly becoming a friend to failure. Doing your class assignment gives you 30% performance in your exams.
“He who adds not to his learning diminishes it”.
“Those who try to do something and fail are infinitely better than those who try to do nothing and succeed.”
- Solving the most difficult part of your subject course: it help you to find some subject easy to pass in exams. “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Many students when they refused to solve their difficult subject. These become their weak point and during the exam, it becomes a problem for them to pass that subject. “Trust your own instinct. Your mistakes might as well be your own, instead of someone else’s”. For you to pass well in your exams, you must make every subject of your course, your best friend and not your enemies. It gives you 20% performance in your result/exams.
“It is the true nature of mankind to learn from mistakes, not from example”.
- Answering past questions: it is you passing your exams. It helps you to be bold and focus when writing your exams. “Progress always involves risks. You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first”. Student who tried to answers all his pass questions, are a students who have tried to pass his subject courses in the exams. “The only failure which lacks dignity is the failure to try.” Some lecturers repeats some of their questions every year and it is my advice as you prepare for your exams, to get all the past questions and answer them one after the other before the exams date.
“I now want to know all things under the sun, and the moon, too. For all things are beautiful in themselves, and become more beautiful when known to man. Knowledge is Life with wings”.
“If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else. ”
~ Lawrence J. Peter
This was where student find it difficult. The question is which kind of books can student read when preparing for exams? Which place can a student stay to study his books and being able to understand all he/she had studied?
“Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you”
Some claim to study when playing their music, some student study in a noise environment and at the end of their study, they end up not encoding anything to their memory. “Experience teaches slowly, and at the cost of mistakes”.
The saying that “experience is the best teacher” was what brought me to this topic. Mr. Mike was a student in my school. Anytime he wants to study his books, he will be playing music. He cannot study without playing his music. A day came that I told him it is wrong to study to study in a noise environment but he disagreed with me. After the promotion exams, Mr. Mike failed his course and was ask to repeat his course.
“Obedience is the mother of success and the wife of safety”.
The Bible made us to know that we can’t serve two masters at the same time. We can only obey one and disobey the other. That is how the brain of a man is. The brain can only function in one direction at the same time. Any student who behaves like Mr. Mike is a friend to failure.
Many years ago, my father told me that if I am studying when playing music, my brain will concentrate to the sound of my music and given it meaning, while my eyes will be looking at the book on my hand as a picture. At the end of my study, the brain will take record of the meaning of the music and my eyes will take the records of the picture of the books I read.
“Much knowledge if out of proportion to the disposition of forces, is invalid, however formally correct it may be”.
For you to know where to study as a student, you must understand the following points. “Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it. “
Ø A place of Study: as a student, the only place that is conducive for your study is your school library & a quite environment. Why these places, was that when you are studying, you concentrates and meditates only on what you are studying. There will be no distractions or noises that will make you not to understand all you have studied.
There is a place you will stay when preparing for your exam and you will not pass it. There is also a place you will stay when preparing for an exam, then you will pass it with distinction. Prov. 8:17 “I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me”.
Jer.29:13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. When you seek to pass your exams with all your heart, you will pass it with distinction.
“The genuine knowledge originates in direct experience”.
It is wrong for you to study at the football stands, along the roads, when there is discussion in your room, in a music/noise room or environment. The reason is that those who practices it, are those that have poor performance in their result.
“Learning is by studying the masters—not their pupils”.
Ø What to study: As a student, it is important for you to know what to study when preparing for an exam. After the lecture of the day, your notebooks (class note) is what you will study as you prepare. Every lecturer set questions from what they have taught you and they expect you to prove to them that you know and understand what they have taught you. john 5:39 You study the scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life, and it is these same scriptures that testify about me,
1 Thes 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
Some students after their lecture, they will dump their school notes and went ahead to read the books in the library. It is wrong for you as a student. The textbooks in the library are there for reference and research to get more understanding on what the lecturer had taught you in class.
Note: There is no lecturer who will set his questions from the books in the library, or from what he had not taught his student in class.

They said “experience is the best teacher”. I was once victims of what I studied when preparing for my exam. I was brought up and been trained that I became a bookworm. As a student in my school, after the lecture hour, I will drop my notebooks and went ahead to study some textbooks from the library.
As my exam is fast approaching, I never take time to have a full revision of my notebooks. I was known as don in my department because I read a lot. After my first semester exam, my result was poor and other students began to ask me why so. The reason was that I never had time for revision on what my lecturer had taught me before the exam date.
