Abuakwa North: Female Junior High Student Attempted Suicide Due To Continued Beating By Teachers
A female JHS student of 14 years of age considered suicide due to purported tensions with a female teacher. The incident with the suicide attempt took place on Thursday, April 20, 2023, in the Eastern Region’s Anweabeng Constituency’s Abuakwa North Ward.
Anweabeng Municipal Assembly (M/A) JHS Form Two students and the girl’s prefect survived the attack because of the quick action taken by her aunt. After being subjected to relentless accusations and harassment, the victim, [name withheld], reportedly attempted suicide during the school day’s class hours. The stated instructor had allegedly been accusing the girl and three of her primary school classmates of spreading rumors about her.
Accusation
Students at Samlesi Salvation Army School in the Yilo Krobo area have accused their female instructor and two other teachers of verbally abusing them following last term’s Basic School Sports Festival. The Class 1, 2, and 3 teachers who returned from the sports festival reported that rumors had circulated in the local Anweabeng village that the children had been “drunk and misbehaving” throughout the competition.
The four accused pupils, though, said they were unaware of the allegations. Meanwhile, it was said that the four students were singled out by name during class time, that they were publicly humiliated, and that they were threatened into telling the “truth.”
Attempted suicide
Class three teacher Madam Dodzie Abigail allegedly picked on the girl’s prefect in particular and bullied her. When life became intolerable for the 14-year-old, she decided to end it. It happened after Madam Dodzie allegedly removed her from class, which she did frequently as a form of punishment. An eyewitness reported that once the student was expelled from the class, he or she ran to the teacher’s cottage, which is located very close to the school.
She then hung herself from a neighboring tree using the rope that had been around her grandmother’s goat’s neck. Ms. Ruth, a vendor in the school cafeteria, rushed to the girl’s aid and was able to save her. “Right away, we noticed her [the victim] running rapidly in the direction of the house.” “Therefore, a teacher sitting under a tree on the school grounds called the victim’s grandmother and asked if she had sent the victim on errands, but the grandmother said no.”
Mrs. Ruth began calling the victim’s name at this point but to no avail. She claimed she heard her niece’s scream and hurried to her location, where she saw the young girl dangling from a tree by a frayed rope.
To this, the eyewitness swiftly added, the student had remarked, “I want to kill myself for Madam Abigail so that she will get what she wants because I don’t know my offense to merit all that she’s making me go through.”
The victim’s father then took his daughter, who had been registered to take the 2023 BECE, out of school, into the car, and drove away.
On Thursday, April 20, the victim’s father filed a report with the Akim New Tafo Police Command. Meanwhile, the police’s efforts on Friday, April 21, to pick up the implicated teacher for interrogation fell flat since the headmaster only agreed to turn her over on Tuesday, April 25. No one showed up at the police station on that day, according to our inquiries before writing this report.
When our reporter, Opambour Jaman Dehyee, tried to get a comment from Mr. Asamoah Isaac, the headmaster of both the primary and JHS levels, he politely declined. He told the reporter that the Abuakwa North Education Directorate would be the finest source of information on what happened.
On April 26, 2023, Sampson Akoto Kwafo, the Abuakwa North Education Directorate’s public relations officer (PRO), confirmed that his department had been made aware of the situation.
The principal and all involved were notified of the situation and informed yesterday. When they showed up at our office, we knew someone had reported a problem. According to Angelonline.com.gh, “the girl’s father has reported the incident to the Tafo Police Station, and the investigation is currently in the hands of Inspector Obeng.”
A spokesperson with the force also stated, “I can’t say on record that it is a true story, but if you want any better particulars or information, Inspector Obeng can be in the best position to do that.”
