2020 BECE TIPS
12 SIMPLE REASONS WHY CANDIDATES FAIL IN THE BASIC EDUCATION CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION

1. Copying down of whole passages as answers to questions, especially the comprehension (Ghanaian Language and English Language).
This approach to attempting or answering questions can be very irritating to the examiner and although the main answer needed maybe somewhere in the copied text, you may earn no mark at all for copying and enter a paragraph or passage as an answer. There are students who copy the page as an answer to a composition question. You will score no mark should you do this in the 2020 BECE.
2. Some scripts were incomprehensible (meaningless) or could not be read at all.
Candidates must write their answers in clear and understandable English. The answer must communicate the kind of information the examiner marking your script is expecting to see.
When you are answering an mination question, remember the Examiner is not your teacher. This means your writing should be legible.
You should also write concise but meaningful sentences. Don’t leave space and hope the Examiner will continue for you.
3. Presenting more than one alternative answer to one question, one of which is either correct or wrong.
Do not provide more than one answer to a question. In the English language paper for instance if you are required to provide one word that replaces another – Provide just one if there are several in mind.
Many candidates often present two answers for one question especially when they are not sure which of them is right. This is not advisable and Candidates should desist from them. Where a candidate gives two answers to a question and one Of them is wrong, he or she scores ZERO.
4. Jumping pages of the answer booklet in presenting answers to one particular question.
Some students leave blank and unused pages in between, others used. This can create a serious problem for students. A blank page indicates you have finished attempting questions, and the examiner marking the script may not spend time checking other pages after the blank page. If you have answers after the blank page, there is a high possibility that it would not be marked and so you will lose the marks for such answers.
5. Poor spelling, Poor handwriting, Faulty Paragraphing, and Misuse of punctuation marks.
Check your handwriting and ensure you read in such a way that the examiner can read. Very bad spelling can also affect your final scores just as poorly written paragraphs. Do your best to read through your answers and punctuate correctly.
6. Non – adherence to rubrics (not following the requirements of the question).
Some students sometimes fail to answer the question required,. Taking your time to read and understand the requirements of the question can go a long way to help such candidates.
7. Some candidates deviated in answering Questions.
There are instances where students answer questions, yet they provided the wrong answer due to their failure to understand the requirements of the question.
8. The wholesale lifting of sentences from the passage and this resulted in vague answers.
Students must avoid the temptation of lifting sentences from the passage to answer comprehension questions. This is unacceptable. Write the answer in your own words as much as possible.
9. Candidates don’t know how to answer composition and comprehension questions.
Some students fail their English language, and other language papers because they do not know how such questions are answered. Knowing how friendly letters are written inside out from the address to the subscription and the kind of conversational language to use helps score better grades. Students must know the formats of each form of letter writing, narrative, and descriptive essays so as to be in a better position to excel in their language papers.
10. Candidates did not understand the rubrics to questions and the question as a whole.
Failing to understand the demands of the question can create problems for the BECE candidate. Always read the question well, understand its requirements before you start solving it.
11. Candidates need to read a lot of literature in the language to help them enrich their vocabulary and expression.
Reading is key. Sadly many BECE candidates have cultivated poor reading habits. Reading varied books increases your vocabulary level, which helps you have a grip over your composition writing skills and overall quality.
12. The answers to some questions are wrongly numbered by some candidates.
Sad to say that some candidates provide accurate answers, but they number them wrongly. Such an error can affect the scores a student obtains after the script is marked. Often, the examiner may strike out the answer as it does not relate to the question number attached to it.
The above should help you get ready no matter how close we are to the start of the examination. Good Luck
