Parents in the Twifo Atti-morkwa District of the Central Region, many of whose children took the 2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination, have threatened to invoke curses on West African Examination Council (WAEC) officials if they do not release the result of the English paper to allow their children to go to school after the Easter break.
Many parents claim that their children scored 7s and 8s on the 2022 BECE, but that WAEC has suddenly scrapped the English paper for no apparent reason. For fear of angering the goddesses of the Pra and Akua Asieduah rivers in the district, they have given WAEC until Easter break to reveal the English result.
On Tuesday, angry parents stormed the main street of Twifu Praso to demonstrate against WAEC officials for not releasing the results of their wards. They carried chop boxes, trunks, bottles of schnapps and akpeteshie, and threats to invoke curses.
Parental representative Madam Esther Ansah expressed her group’s displeasure to WAEC, pleading for the board to speedily announce the exam results so that their children might enroll in secondary school.
Kasapa News Yaw Boagyan stated a week and a half ago that three students whose English paper was canceled attempted suicide by consuming a deadly substance. If their exam paper is not released, their parents say, their children have repeatedly threatened suicide.
What does the Council mean when it says that the results of candidates have been withheld? How is this different from results that have been canceled?
When candidate results are withheld by the council after the results of the examination have been disclosed, it is argued that the candidates were unfairly treated. This typically occurs when those individuals are the focus of an investigation into allegations of cheating on an examination. Once investigations are finished and conclusions are made, the results are made public.
A candidate’s performance in a topic or the entire examination may be annulled if it is shown that the candidate committed malpractice before, during, or after the examination. The candidate or his or her school will be notified of the decision in a formal letter.
Why does the Council sometimes withhold the results of candidates who were not involved in examination malpractice?
Only candidates about whom the Council has sufficient reason to think that they may have engaged in examination malpractices may have their results withheld. The perpetrators are then punished once thorough investigations have been conducted. Individuals who are exonerated have their full test results made public.
When do we expect to see the results?
Exam cheating is not an issue for students who are still waiting for their results. Inaccurate candidate registration details, etc., could cause problems for these applicants. These findings will be made public once we have gathered all the relevant data.
