Association Of Authors And Publishers Apologises To NaCCA Over Controversial Textbook
The Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers has issued a full public apology for the distribution of a textbook with anti-Christian material intended for elementary school students.
The group claims it will henceforth make sure all textbook contents are carefully vetted to prevent the spread of information that could be harmful to students. It has been stated that the History of Ghana for Basic Schools, Learner’s Book 4, has a section on the negative aspects of Christianity.
As a result of statements made in the book, attributed to one Francis Benjamin Appiah and one Henry David Appiah, the authors have been the subject of online backlash. The writers cite an increase in poverty as one of the many drawbacks of Christianity.
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) stated in response to the book that the organization had not approved the quoted edition.
Jonh Akwasi Amponsah, national president of the Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers, responded to the uproar over the book by saying the organization will take into account all of the public’s concerns.
We apologize fully to the Ministry of Education, NaCCA, the Christian Council, and any other Ghanaian who finds the book’s statements offensive. Many Ghanaians have relied on textbooks for years; thus, the authors and publishers are appealing to the country’s citizens and other interested parties to maintain their faith in them. His words.
If you can recall, NaCCA said in a press release on May 25 that the content was being pulled so that problems could be investigated further and fixed.
It noted that the social media information on the ‘disadvantages of Christianity’ was not material they accepted during the approval process, even if the book from the Excellence Series had gone through the regular approval procedure. According to their argument, the content does not accurately reflect what NaCCA deems acceptable.
