Babies In Galamsey Areas Are Being Born With One Eye And Without Genitalia- Pathologist From KNUST Reveals
Galamsey has been Ghana’s problem for a very long time. But now, the rate at which people are suffering due to illegal mining is getting worse. The government is doing its possible best to fight the Galamsey operation in Ghana.
Metals such as mercury used in gold extraction by galamsey operators are linked to brain damage and other malformations in children born in locations with a high risk of unlawful mining.
According to the research of Prof.
Pathologist and Associate Professor at KNUST’s School of Medical Sciences, Paul Poku Sampene Ossei, is also a consultant at KATH’s Komfo Anokye Medical Center.
He explained that cognitive impairment is the first thing that happens to these babies when they become infected with these toxins because their brains do not react to the typical things we see.
Gold miners and the people of mining villages are exposed to mercury, cyanide, and lead, three metals commonly employed in the mining process.
Up to half of these heavy metals in air or food contamination can be absorbed by children and newborns.
About 15% to 20% of metals are absorbed by adults. The pathologist remarked, “The child’s digestive tract has a very high affinity to all those metals, including lead.” Prof. Sampene Ossei was participating in a discussion on Luv FM about the dangers to public health and safety posed by illicit mining. He claims that in some countries, it is not uncommon for newborns to have their legs form around their chest, neck, and stomach. “In Ghana, we have babies being born with one eye and without genitalia,” Prof. He continued, “Therefore, if such a woman resides in a galamsey area, her newborn will undoubtedly have deformities.” The children have diseases associated with hypertension and the kidneys.
