Fans Question Black Stars Coach Chris Hughton’s Bad Treatment Of The Ayew Brothers
Chris Hughton, the new coach of the Ghana Black Stars, has come under fire for allegedly mistreating the Ayew siblings. The Ghana Black Stars’ new coach, an Irishman of Ghanaian ancestry, won one game and tied another in his first two outings in charge.
The lack of Andre Ayew and the disjointed performance were major talking points after his first game at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
Not even Andre Ayew, who didn’t even start, was a surprise sub when the squad needed a spark to scare the Angolans. Although the team desperately needed motivation on the field, the captain since his U-20 days, who is known for his clutch moments, had been disregarded by Chris Hughton.
Even if Ghana had won in the nick of time, the fact that they passed up a golden opportunity to score by not playing Andre “Clutch” Ayew would have been inexplicable.
So, fast forward to the Angola game, where Andre Ayew, the team captain, was sidelined with a minor injury. Even though usual second-in-command Thomas Partey stayed off duty out of an abundance of caution, he was somehow bypassed in favor of the more junior and inexperienced captain on this particular day. Despite not adhering to the standard protocol, Chris Hughton has not announced any changes to the team’s leadership.
Over the years, the Ghana Black Stars have often been led by a captain (Andre Ayew), a first and second deputy captain (Partey and Richard Ofori), the team’s oldest player (usually the captain), etc.
This is why, with Stephen Appiah, John Mensah, and Michael Essien all out due to injury, Richard Kingson captained the side in a few games during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
In the absence of the captain, the deputy captain, and the second deputy captain, the senior most player on the team, Mubarak Wakaso, captained the side to a 1-1 draw in South Africa during the 2021 AFCON qualifying tournament. Even though Andre Ayew, the team’s captain, as well as his deputies, Partey and Richard Ofori, were all unavailable for yesterday’s game, Daniel Amartey was given the nod to lead the squad instead.
Online reactions
Addo: Ah, this is a foolish question. Ghana needs those who can do it and do it better. There is no need to ask that question. Football is not a fashion; it is about commitment.
Abae: This is a demoniac fabrication with a deliberate intention of dividing the Black Stars; stop that and allow the coach to do his work after the captaincy does not win a game.
Bernard: No fan is complaining over anything, and we are happy he made those bold decisions. The Black Stars team is not for a particular group or family. Well done Chris.
Emma: The coach has been given a specific task, so let’s do away with the unnecessary talk about players who want to be worshipped as gods. assuming those don’t exist. Leave the coach to do his work and forget about how karma affects people. The Konongo Kaya-spirited humans who always take every glory associated with Ghana football Enough is enough.
Lizzy: In fact, let’s allow the coach and the players to do what they know how to do best. Some of these things can be instigative. Please, it will create weird feelings among the players towards the coach. The players are not complaining, why this article? Can we mind our businesses? Abaaa
Micheal: Does it mean that if the Ayews are not doing well, they cannot be changed? Nobody owns the Black Stars. The coach chooses players that would give him results.
