Hajia4Real Extradited From UK To US In Alleged $2M Romance Scam [Full Details]
Mona Faiz Montrage, better known by her stage name Hajia4Real, is a musician and social media influencer from Ghana who was recently extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States on charges of fraud involving more than $2 million. On Monday, May 15, 2023, federal prosecutors stated that Hajia4real was being investigated for allegedly participating in a terrible lonely hearts scam targeting elderly, unmarried Americans.
On Monday, the New York Post reported that ‘The Badder Than’ singer made an appearance in federal court in Manhattan. The defendant pleaded not guilty during the trial. After posting a $500,000 bond, her release is expected in the coming days. She must wear a GPS-enabled ankle monitor as part of the terms of her release.
Federal investigators claim that Montrage, who became famous through her Instagram page Hajia4Real, which at its peak had a following of about 3.4 million users, was part of a network of scammers based in Ghana and Nigeria.
By exchanging emails, texts, and social media messages under fictitious names, these people were able to trick their victims into believing they were in a romantic relationship.
“As alleged, Mona Faiz Montrage was a member of a criminal conspiracy that specifically targeted older Americans through romance scams,” stated Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams. Victims of these schemes can suffer “financial and emotional loss.”
Additionally, he stated, “Thanks to the efforts of our law enforcement partners, Montrage was arrested abroad and has been brought to the United States to face justice.
“According to court documents, one victim sent Hajia4Real $89,000 in 82 separate wire transactions under the pretense that the money would be used to help her father’s farm in Ghana.
According to the papers, Hajia then tried to justify their fake marriage by providing the victim with a tribal marriage certificate.
The fashionista and serial entrepreneur utilized her real identity over a series of phone conversations that set in motion the events of this intricate hoax.
Prosecutors say that Mother of One not only benefited financially from one victim but from countless others who fell for scams run by her ring.
It is estimated that Montrage made somewhere around $2 million, which she then stashed in several bank accounts she operated, including one in the name of 4Real Designs, a made-up apparel brand. The indictment alleges that the stolen money was laundered and distributed to other members of the criminal organization.
You may recall that on November 10, 2022, word of her arrest and initial punishment in the United Kingdom made headlines, only to be rejected by her legal team. Eventually, on Friday, Hajia4Real was extradited to the United States to face allegations of wire fraud, money laundering, receiving stolen property, and conspiracy. She faces a maximum possible prison term of 20 years if found guilty of the most serious offense.
