History or Coincidence? Weird Repeats Of 2018 World Cup Events in 2022
Browsing through the events of the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia, I happened to come across a few weird repeats of 2018 world cup events in 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Fasten your seatbelts as we drive through a couple of these said moments.
Weird Repeats Of 2018 World Cup Events in 2022
Tracking down from the group stages, Iran and Costa Rica somehow managed to be placed in the same Group at the group stage level in 2018 and 2022. Interestingly, both managed to secure the same positions after playoffs of the group stages however, with different points.
Iran was placed in Group B in 2018 and 2022 and placed 3rd in both events with 4 points in 2018 and 3 points in 2022 whilst Costa Rica on the other hand placed in Group E with 4 points in 2018 and 3 points in 2022. What a coincidence I should say.
Brazil and Switzerland also managed to be in the same groups in 2018 and 2022 and placed 1st and 2nd respectively in both events. They were placed in Group E in 2018 and Group G in 2022. None of them made it past the Quarter final stage in both events.
France, Denmark and Australia also managed to play against each other in the same groups. In 2018, they were placed in Group C and Group D in 2022. Australia and Denmark swapped positions in both events (i.e., last 4th in 2018 for Australia and 2nd for Denmark and vice versa in 2022) as France maintained the first position. A quick table below is how their matches turned out.
Moving forward let us have a quick look at the teams that made it to the Round of 16 in 2018 and 2022. Unfortunately, none of the teams were paired up as they did in 2018.
- France
- Argentina
- Croatia
- Japan
- Switzerland
- Brazil
- England
- Spain
- Portugal
Now let us have a look at which teams advanced to quarter finals out the 9 teams in both 2018 and 2022. Argentina was eliminated from the league by France after a 4:3 defeat. However, they managed to secure entry into the 2022 quarter final stage and played against Netherlands.
- France
- Croatia
- Brazil
France and Croatia both won their games against Belgium and England respectively and moved on to the finals.
Did you know that Croatia eliminated England from the world cup in 2018 at the Semi-Finals stage whereas France eliminated England at the Quarter Finals stage in 2022? This might not be a coincidence, but it registers as something.
And If Argentina wins this world cup, they will be in the same group, same group stage position as France did in 2018 and became winners.

To conclude, with Argentina securing the win in the semi-finals against Croatia, everyone eagers and patiently awaits who bags victory between France and Morocco. What are your predictions? Do well to share them in the comment section below.
