Poor math ed in elementary school leads to algebra struggles
Re “State’s ‘math wars’ are hurting Black, Latino students” (April 23): I was an algebra teacher into three decades and found one basic principle: If you don’t know basic arithmetic, i.e., how to add, subtract, multiply and divide, quickly and correctly, you cannot succeed in Algebra 1.
The article states, “The system is failing these kids well before high school.” If elementary school students were actually forced to conquer the basics of arithmetic, the more advanced math courses would be much easier for everyone.
