Publish % of private JHS pupils placed in top SHS – PEC to GES
The Private Education Coalition (PEC) has requested the Ghana Education Service (GES) to publish the percentage of private Junior High school (JHS) pupils placed in their first-choice school for the last four academic years.
PEC’s demand follows a proposal made by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof Kwasi Amankwa for a 90 % placement slot into public ‘Category A’ Senior High Schools to be reserved for only public schools.
Mr Opoku-Amankwa early this week in an interview with Asempa FM monitored by EducationWeb disclosed he in several meetings had proposed for public schools to be prioritised in school placement over private basic schools.
“In our various meetings I have suggested 80% or 90% Category A placement to be allocated to students from public schools and those from private schools be made to write an entrance exam before given admission,” he stated.
The GES Professor continued that “I would want the 30% ‘Category A’ school allocation currently reserved for public schools to be given to the private schools and even with that allow them to sit for an entrance test after the BECE.”
But, the Coalition of Private Schools following his comment has asked his outfit to publish the percentage of students from private schools who were placed in their first-choice school should be published for the last 4 years.
PEC has also requested further clarification and reasons for private Junior High School (JHS) students after sitting the Basic Education Certificate Examination be made to write an entrance examination before given SHS admission.
“Could we have further clarification and reasons for private JHS students having to take entrance examinations for SHS after taking the BECE as stated by the Director-General, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa in the press this week?

The Director-General also stated unconstitutionally that 90% of places in public SHS ought to be reserved for public school pupils. This is extremely concerning and inflammatory and wishes that this statement be retracted,” PEC said.
