Readers Write In #683: Tabassum madam ki jai ho!

Tabassum Fatima Hashmi aka Tabu was the most talented, but (Box office wise) the least successful of all the actresses to make their debut in Hindi films during the 1990s. After playing the conventional heroine in most of her early 90s films, she was relegated to the
dreaded rank of supporting actress in some terrible films like “Biwi No.1” and “Hum Saath Saath Hain” by the end of ‘90s. She had an even rougher ride in the ’00s and ’10s when she was all but forced to disappear for long periods from the big screen due to lack of good opportunities. In this period, she even had to play Salman Khan’s (who’s 6 years her senior) elder sister- truly a desperate time. A small consolation is that during this period, she was lucky enough to make a name for herself in the international arena ,with films like “The Namesake” and “Life of Pi.”
Finally, now in her 50s, things are happening for Tabu in a big way. She always had the support of the critics and a well-earned reputation of being a good or even a great actress (Two national awards for best actress confirms it), but the kind of Box office success she has been experiencing in the last five years or so is unprecedented in her career: Andhadhun, Drishyam films, Golmaal again, Bhool Bhulaiyya 2 and now the all-female-cast led Crew- all these films have Tabu holding centerstage with superb performances, and for which, rightfully, she is getting all the accolades. Well, It’s high time. She was the best of the lot of actresses who emerged during the 1990s , but since she did not properly conform to the image of a mainstream Hindi film heroine (too tall, not very glamourous, too girl next door and maybe too talented) in the age of Raveenas and Karishmas and Manishas and item dance numbers and ‘short’ heroes- she lost out on a lot of good opportunities (mainly because she was taller than the reigning heroes like Aamir and Shahrukh). And since she had a rather controversy-free life, it did not make her a darling of the gossip rags and therefore missed out on that kind of publicity too- that’s the kind of publicity that made a limited actress like Manisha who hardly had 2 or 3 hits in her career appear to be as big a star as the GOAT Madhuri Dixit, ugh! . Even when she got meaty roles in mainstream films like Kandukondein Kandukondein or Filhaal, lesser talents like Aishwarya & Sushmita stole the spotlight from her.
Most of her career Tabu had to remain on the sidelines and make do with whatever roles that came her way – a Virasat here, a Maachis or Chandni Bar there. She was also a solid pan-Indian star in her time – having acted in very popular films in all South Indian languages- maybe the most successful of that kind after Sridevi, though nobody notices it. But ultimately, talent triumphs in the long run and now at the age of 52 she seems to have created a niche market of her own that she did not have in her 20s and 30s; and that too at a time when most of her (more successful) peers and even juniors have been forgotten and edged out of the industry. She was labelled a serious actress throughout her career and now she’s being hailed for her comic roles- seriously, who has the range to play a truly dark character (Lady Macbeth) in “Maqbool” and such a hilarious character in “Golmaal again.” I can’t think of an actress , even in Hollywood maybe the great Meryl Streep) , leave alone any of our ‘Woods’ to have this kind of career resurgence at this age. I have been a fan of hers since I saw her in “Prem (1995)” and was bowled over by the grace, confidence and talent displayed by her in her debut performance- Okay, technically her debut was “Pehla Pehla Pyar in 1994 and a Telugu film called “Coolie No.1”, but she started shooting for Prem first and due to the film’s delay (it was in production for 5 years), she started doing other films. The only thing i didn’t (and still don’t) like was her name. I mean why would anyone reduce such a beautiful name to some kind a forbidden word .
Anyway, it’s time to say it loud- Tabassum madam ki jai ho!
