Russian invasion of Ukraine: 54 more Ghanaians arrive home
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, another set of 54 more Ghanaians have arrived home from Romania where they had been sheltered after they exited Ukraine. The 54 returnees landed at the Kotaka International Airport early Monday morning.
The first batch of Ghanaians returned on March 1 through the efforts of the foreign affairs ministry. Information made public by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong indicated that some students have refused to return to Ghana even though the government of Ghana had provided them with air tickets for the journey back home.

Those who refused to come back to Ghana add up to 15 students. They are scheduled to travel and arrive in Ghana on 8th March 2022 but they were not ready to come back. “About fifteen of them have decided that they were not taking advantage”, he disclosed.

15 students refuse to return, get offers to continue education
According to the Minister, the students communicated their decision to stay on Thursday, March 3, 2021; after the government had paid for their tickets. He added that the students had been given the opportunity to continue with their education in Hungary hence the decision.

Speaking on the decision of the students not to return to Ghana, the minister said “… schools in Hungary have expressed their desire to offer accommodation and tuition to the Ghanaian students, hence their refusal to join the evacuation flight.

The Minister added that the parents of some of these students have approved their wards’ decisions not to return to Ghana.
