This Easter Sunday I’ll be seeking something different
Harlan is a financial planner who lives in Little Italy.
Can there be much doubt that one of the highest and greatest purposes of religion is to create a path to righteousness? The idea is — at the very least — worth contemplating given the contentiousness that has beleaguered too many forms of discourse today. Could it be that way to a more gentle, less contentious dialog about our differences lies in a connection with our individual spirituality? Said in terms of a life-long Episcopalian, it’s a call to focus on connecting with one’s Holy Spirit.
Hopefully, this notion does not sound entirely too pedestrian, because after all, the venom directed at this humble Libertarian from some who disagree with my views can be incredibly toxic at times. What’s to think channeling the Holy Spirit or anything else will calm the level of hostility that the electronic age has brought us?
Here’s one example — too many journalists have become partisans and appear perfectly comfortable misrepresenting facts to advance a narrative. How about the TV commentators who lambasted Donald Trump the other day for his words about China, Mexico and the U.S. car industry? Basically, what he said was that if the Chinese are able to build enough factories in Mexico, that in turn build enough cars to sell to America, the automobile industry here would experience a “bloodbath.” That’s what he said. I heard it myself. What many viewers heard was that Trump declared there would be a “bloodbath” if he was not elected U.S. president this November. It implies that the man believes there certainly would be violence if he loses the election to Joe Biden.
Let’s please not focus on anyone’s opinion about either man, because that’s noise that distracts from the point. The anchor people who perpetuated this blatant mischaracterization of what the former president said were not behaving in a righteous manner. They weren’t even close. We can disagree about who is, or is not qualified to run the country, but let’s at least have an honest discussion about who’s saying exactly what. You’d hope that anyone who believed in a right or wrong would simply refuse to be a part of this kind of deceit, but there they are, appearing on your screen nightly, denying reality as well as your opportunity to form your own opinion about who’s best to become president. Is that what the Holy Spirit directs you to do? Where is your soul, your conscience, the part of you that says, be truthful, even if it is uncomfortable?
It was during a Catholic service that I attended last year when I gained great clarity about one purpose for the Holy Spirit. The Father delivering the message said, it’s each individual’s conduit to the almighty. It is essentially your channel to God. How can anyone who is connected to this glorious energy think that it’s OK to be untruthful in the name of anything, let alone a narrative?
I recently sent a friend some encouraging words about her journey to a new professional career. Coincidently, the field she’s pursuing is political in nature, a nasty profession by numerous accounts in my opinion. My message to her:
“Politics is a blood sport, watch your back, guard your reputation fiercely and walk in the light. That final note is the most important in my view. Do not deviate from what you know is right.”
There will always be forces pulling you this way or that, but stay true to your Holy Spirit (or however you label it). Be gentle in your approach to all things and do what’s right, not because it enhances you personally, but because it enhances the world around you.
Happy Easter.
