Voters need to do homework about candidates, issues
A lot has been said about the importance of people exercising their right to vote.
However, perhaps more emphasis needs to be placed upon voters conducting research about the candidates and issues that will appear on their ballots.
So if you’re one of those folks who intends to vote in the Nov. 7 General Election, but really have no idea about whom you might elect or what levies you’ll pass or reject, we have some ideas on ways to become knowledgeable.
One of the keys to determining what you’ll see on the Nov. 7 ballot is knowing your official community of residence.
On the surface, that sounds like a simple matter. But if you’re one of those people who always says you live, for instance, in Perry — just Perry — but don’t know specifically if you reside in Perry Village, Perry Township or North Perry Village, that’s a problem.
Staying focused on the example of those three Perry communities, uninformed voters might not realize each of those places will have elections with candidates for different offices, and in some instances, different levy questions.
And perhaps someone who moved recently to Perry Village might not realize that registered voters in their community, North Perry and Perry Township all participate in electing the Perry Township trustees and fiscal officer.
So if you need to confirm your official community of residence, your polling place and the ballot with which you’ll be presented, your county elections board can help.
For example, if you visit the Lake County Elections Board website — www.lakecountyohio.gov/boe — and go to the department menu, you’ll see there’s an entry for Sample Ballots.
If you click on that item, it will take you to another page with a link for voter lookup. Plug in your first and last name, and your next click will provide with your precinct and polling location, and a precinct-specific sample ballot.
In the Nov. 7 election, all Ohio voters will be asked to approve or reject two statewide ballot issues.
Issue 1 would establish a state constitutional right to “make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions,” including decisions about abortion, contraception, fertility treatment, miscarriage care, and continuing pregnancy, according to a story in the Ohio Capital Journal.
Issue 2 would create a new state law to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana for adults ages 21 and above, including cultivation, processing, sale, purchase, possession and home growth, according to that same Ohio Capital Journal story.
Anyone who is seeking more information on these ballot issues might want to check out a resource that can be found on the Ohio Secretary of State website.
The Ohio Secretary of State has produced a report which includes combined arguments for and against Issues 1 and 2 offered by outside sources, which are printed side-by-side. You also can read the full text of the constitutional amendment that would be created by Issue 1 and state law that would be established if Issue 2 passes.
For voters who want to do their homework on local candidates and ballot questions, we have some tips on how to proceed.
The News-Herald has been featuring preview stories throughout the fall campaign on contested candidate races, as well as ballot issues, leading up the election.
When it comes to levy or charter issues, we would advise that you understand what you’re voting for or against, and see how it will affect your personal finances or other aspects of your community.
You can also search for candidates’ websites or Facebook pages. These are good places to check out each candidate’s platform and see how it conforms to your preferences.
In conclusion, The News-Herald encourages all registered voters to do independent research before voting in the Nov. 7 election. That way, your votes can best support your beliefs and help fulfill the type of life you want to live.
