Advantages of Free SHS and double-track system – Dr Osei Adutwum
Despite the suggestions and negative comments from some Ghanaians particularly the main opposition party about the double-track system, Dr Osei Adutwum has outlined some benefit of its implementation in schools.
The teaching minister speaking on the Kumasi-based Pure 95.7 FM morning drive with host Kwame Adinkra monitored by Edulearnweb.com noted that President Akufo-Addo directed for the cancellation of the cut-off point.

Advantages of Free SHS and double-track system according to Dr. Osei Adutwum
- It enables more children to get access to secondary education first started in the United States of America.
- If not for the implementation of the double-track system, the majority of candidates who sat for the 2020 edition of the WASSCE for School Candidates and students currently in school would be at home.
- The cut-off point which was aggregate 25 and has been canceled amid the double-track system he said was to determine the number of candidates to be enrolled in SHSs, a situation which left many children disadvantaged.
- Over 100,000 candidates in 2015 and 2016 were not able to go to SHS because of financial problems even though they passed BECE but for Free SHS and double-track every child is in school.
- The double-track system has reduced the huge number of students in classrooms.
- There is effective teaching and monitoring in schools classified as ‘Category A’ or top schools in the country.

Major Challenge of the Free SHS
- The Deputy Education Minister explained that due to insufficient facilities to accommodate students in various Senior High Schools, the previous administration’s introduced cut-off point to limit the number of enrolment.
Plans of Government in Action
The Akufo-Addo led government is currently building and expanding infrastructures in Senior High Schools to phase out the green and gold track system in the subsequent years.
