We Are Yet To Find Evidence Of Vote Buying – Peace Council
As of now, the National Peace Council has not uncovered any concrete evidence of vote-buying in the Ashanti Region’s ongoing Kumawu by-election.
The National Patriotic Party (NPP) was accused of purchasing votes from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and certain Wonoo citizens.
Hakeem Baidoo, a member of the Council in the Ashanti Region and a member of the group monitoring the election, says they have heard rumors but have seen no proof. We came to see if what others are saying is true, and so far we haven’t found any evidence to back it up. Aggressive rumors are circulating that individuals are freely handing out cash, but we haven’t seen any evidence of this at all since our arrival.
They were only on TV, but we haven’t seen anything like them yet. He reassured reporters that, as officials of the Peace Council, they take great care to avoid conducting their inspections in areas where they are not welcome.
Meanwhile, Rt. Rev. Nuh Ben Abubekr, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Peace Council, has called on both the NPP and the NDC to work for peaceful election day and post-election results.
Rev. Abubekr warned that 2019’s Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election would be disastrous if the executive committee and the members allowed it to happen again. Meanwhile, Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s director of communications, has also denied allegations that the party bought votes.
He claimed that the main opposition party’s charges are unsubstantiated because his group has not engaged in any such illegal activity. He urged the people to dismiss the unsubstantiated rumors that party executives had distributed money to influence votes in the run-up to the election.
Voters reject GHc10 from NPP candidate agents
It has been reported that certain Kumawu constituency voters have turned down GHc10 from New Patriotic Party agents campaigning for Ernest Anim. Some voters were seen leaving a house where agents had broken in close to a voting place in a video posted by JoyNews. Meanwhile, Mustapha Gbande, the deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is purchasing votes in the current election.
Social media videos of NPP agents handing out cups of rice and pieces of cloth to voters went viral in the days leading up to the election.
Salam Mustapha, the NPP’s National Youth Organizer, denied that the party was trying to buy votes by saying that the supporter had taken the initiative.
At some polling places in Kumawu, in the Ashanti Region, voting began promptly at 7:00 a.m. Long lines of voters could be seen waiting for the polls to open as early as 6:00 a.m. There will be a total of 75 polling locations where 34,000 eligible voters can cast their ballots.
