“GES Must Answer This”: Ghanaians React To Viral Photo Of A Textbook With Questions On The National Cathedral
Bright Simons, VP of IMANI Africa, responded to a snapshot of a passage from a primary school textbook that questions the building of Ghana’s national cathedral. The photo documented inquiries with neutral explanations of the National Cathedral. The vice president of IMANI expressed his displeasure with how people are reacting to this development on Twitter, pointing the finger at the questions themselves.
The National Cathedral argument has made its way into a textbook, and the Ghanaian public is outraged. The tweet argued that students should be upset about how questions 290 and 291 were worded and the options given for their solutions.
Since the book photo went viral, many have been discussing its implications for education and the subtle way in which politics seem to be seeping into even the most fundamental aspects of schooling.
Below, you’ll find responses to his tweet:
Staal: The education system is falling. A country must not allow politics into the classroom. Education must be very objective. Shame on the Education Ministry.
Bright: I am shocked that some Ghanaians are angry because the national cathedral debate has found its way into a textbook of sorts. What they should be angry about are the poor framing of questions 290 and 291 and the answer choices. Read carefully.
Kan Formal: Of all the things about Ghana’s culture, history, development, and policies that Ghanaian pupils should be encouraged to know and embrace, do you in a second think that the construction of a national cathedral for selfish purposes should be one of them? I don’t think so.
Max Komba: This sums up the kind of education system we have: Nigeria and other countries are given exemptions from English entry tests, universities, job openings, etc. in developed countries due to their high level of literacy. This is heartless.
Peace Man: It’s also telling to come to terms with the icons of intelligence in Ghana and our stock in trade. Bright, have you asked about those who write books for children?
I am as guilty as you of engaging in writing on other issues than simple books for children.
Ben: There’s critical thinking or so ever in Q291; the 290 is bogus and nonsense. Assuming the answer is C (which is exactly the intent), couldn’t the same people be in any of the professions in A, b, and d? What a joke.@richlexzIs this what your kids are going to be learning?
