Mo Ibrahim Foundation Governance for Development in Africa Initiative (GDAI) 2021 Ph.D Scholarship is for study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)
The Centre of African Studies is offering two African Nationals the opportunity to receive the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Governance for Development in Africa Initiative (GDAI) 2021 Ph.D Scholarship is for study in the United Kingdom. It is a (Fully Funded) educational opportunity for postgraduate studies.
The scholarship which is funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation is focused on areas such as bureaucracy and governance for development in Africa.
The scholarship could be made up of projects for the successful applicants designed to help better comprehend and appreciate the public sector and governance capabilities. Other issues to be covered include political settlements.
Other areas of interest are state owned businesses/enterprises, issues concerning framing and designing policies aimed at development.
Additional areas that the awardees may focus on include the public sector in general, civil service, governance and developmental issues.
All applicants who are interested in accessing this scholarship must first and foremost gain an UNCONDITIONAL OFFER for the PhD. This can be done by the candidate applying to SOAS Doctoral School.

Mo Ibrahim Foundation Ph.D Fully Funded Scholarship Criteria
- All applicants must have permanent residence in an African country
- Preference will be given to applicants resident in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Applicant must have obtained an unconditional offer to study for the PhD at the SOAS Doctoral School.
Eligible PhDs for the scholarship
- Development studies
- Law
- Economics
- International relations or Politics
- CISD (Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy
- DEFIM (Department for Financial and Management Studies)
- Distance Learning
When can the applicant apply for the scholarship?
Applicants can apply for the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Ph.D Fully Funded Scholarship after securing an admission. Students are to note that, their application will be accessed based on the content of their application and academic related criterion established for the scholarship.
Documents Applicants must furnish the SOAS with
- A copy of the unconditional offer obtained from the admission department of SOAS.
- Complete CV with applicants accurate E-mail
- The applicant must also provide a two page statement that outlines his or her knowledge and interest in issues relating to governance.
- A research proposal which was sent to SOAS during the admission process
- One academic reference which must be sent via ab17@soas.ac.uk
It is important that applicants know the SOAS reserves the right to not award the said scholarship.
