Students at Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem Girls Senior High School SHS in the Ashanti Region recently unveiled the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the first aircraft in Ghana built entirely from scratch. On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, the presentation took place, coinciding with the sacred Akan festival of Awukudae.
The presentation included an introduction of the school’s Engineering Club to the king of the Asante Kingdom.
Delegation
The delegation included the principal, Silvia Newton, the district education director for Atwima Kwanwoma, Mrs. Doris Ofori, the assistant principal in charge of administration, Madam Abigail Efe Mensah, Mr. Francis Adusei, the school’s accountant, Selina Afriyie, and Christiana Ewusi, both assistant principals in charge of domestic and academic affairs, respectively.
During the presentation, Madam Silvia Newton praised the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his unwavering support of the university.
“You’ve been providing the school with laptops, books, and other teaching and learning tools regularly, in addition to your excellent leadership. Thanks to your prompt action, all of the school’s inner roadways were built, protecting children and faculty from dust and muck. “Because of your unwavering support, our students were able to push themselves to greater heights, which ultimately resulted in the development of this aircraft.”
Technical Group
Tutor Mr. Ferdinand Sam, student Mr. Akwasi Owusu Bismark, and pupils Gloria Anyelebe, Benedicta Oduro, and Osman Hemayet were invited to shake hands with the King in recognition of their engineering project.
Mr. Ferdinand Sam, who had the opportunity to present the project to Asantehene, said the group was motivated by a wish to make something worthwhile out of the materials at hand.
He went on to say that another goal is to equip every student with the tools they need to think critically and imaginatively about how to solve problems in a way that will shape Ghana’s future for the better. He let out that the group has also worked on additional projects that will be unveiled to the public shortly. Statements by Otumfuo
After the presentation, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II praised the school’s administration for their efforts.
He was especially impressed with the engineering club’s innovative spirit and encouraged them to keep pushing boundaries.
The Asantehene has promised to continue assisting the school.
He said he’ll go back to see how he can support the pupils once more by inspecting the ongoing road construction and other infrastructure projects.
He said that when he arrives at the university, he will also be able to watch the test flight of the plane.
Background
The female-only school’s Engineering Club built and piloted the experimental plane. The team of inventors claims they set out to create a plane so the Ghanaian Navy could more effectively monitor the country’s maritime borders.
OTEC 102.9 FM, a media company situated in Kumasi, Ghana, released videos of the prototype aircraft’s test flight on social media, attracting the interest of a wide range of Ghanaians.
