Heartbreaking Moments As Vice President Bawumia, Speaker, And Others Bid Farewell To Former IGP Mr Peter Nanfuri
Yesterday, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana, joined thousands of mourners in the courtyard of the State House in Accra to pay respects to the late Mr. Peter Tenganabang Nanfuri, Inspector General of Police. Former IGP, Mr. Nanfuri, 80, passed away in February. He served as the 20th IGP from October 1, 1996, to January 21, 2001.
Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Governor Ernest Addison of the Bank of Ghana, Members of Parliament, Ministers of State, and Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare were all in attendance at the funeral.
There were also regional commanders, traditional rulers, clergy, members of the Police Management Board, and other security organizations.
The Director General of Administration, Commissioner of Police (COP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, read a tribute on behalf of the Ghana Police Service, which stated that his passing had left an everlasting impact on the hearts of the police community. “You were a pillar of the service and one of our heroes. While in office, you battled for various personnel allowances and did what you could enhance the working circumstances of police officers of all ranks,” he said. Mrs. Pearl Mansa Nanfuri said that her late husband was a role model and that she would always cherish the good times they shared. “He was my inspiration because he worked so hard and was so dedicated to his career,” she continued.
The children wrote, “Today we mourn your passing but are equally comforted by the legacy you have left behind.” We are willing to declare that it is still, to this day, without equal.” Former Christ the King Catholic Church Parish Priest Reverend Father Andrew Campbell preached a sermon encouraging believers to be true to God and show love to one another. The Rev. Campbell exhorted people to put their faith in God rather than in temporal possessions. He emphasized taking stock of one’s life to determine if it was headed in the correct direction. The Reverend Father Campbell urged the general population to help those less fortunate.
The remains were flown to Jirapa for burial after the funeral service.
The late Mr. Nanfuri was born on October 12, 1942, in Jirapa, Upper West Region. He went on to become a lawyer.
He attended the University of Ghana at Legon for his undergraduate studies.
Nanfuri held several positions in the Ghana Police Service. In 1986, he oversaw the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), which investigated threats to national security.
Peter Nanfuri became the fourth Paramount Chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area on July 23, 2005, when he was unskinned. On April 28, 2007, he was formally introduced to the public in his new role at Jirapa’s Naa Yelpoe Park. Naa Ansoleh Ganaa II is his formal or royal name or title.
Nanfuri is the great-grandson of the original Naa Ansoleh Ganaa, who was named Naa Ansoleh Ganaa I by the British colonial authorities.
Bapereyiri Yelpore, the previous Paramount Chief, passed away seven years prior. Nanfuri had to fight off his cousins for the role of chief, even though his father was already a chief.
