Top 4 Causes of Sickness To Avoid Daily
Why do some people get sick more often than others? Is it a genetic thing? Is it a lifestyle thing? Or is it a combination of both? As nature would have it, it happens to be both. While you cannot change your genes, you can change your lifestyle. Let’s take a look at the top causes of people getting sick.

Stress
If you want to weaken your immune system, simply stress it. There are plenty of ways to do this. You can party too much, drink too much alcohol and not sleep enough. Or you can worry, lose sleep, and feel anxious all the time. All of these things cause your brain to think that you’re under attack. Your body reacts by producing cortisol, the stress hormone, which in the long run, makes you eat more and weakens your immune system.
Eating Poorly
You may be happy and relaxed when you eat a bunch of junk food, but your immune system is made up of cells that need vitamins and minerals to function at optimal levels. Loading your body up with refined sugar, refined flour and who-knows-what preservatives do your immune system no good. Instead, choose to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, since these things contain high levels of cell-protecting chemicals.
Staying in Small, Confined Spaces
Your NYC apartment might be tiny, but at least you’re there by yourself. However, as we all learned from the coronavirus pandemic, confined spaces with hundreds of other strangers in the subway is a pretty great way to spread viruses. Even if you’re living a stress-free, healthy life in the city, riding the subway for long periods of time increases your risk of getting sick. This goes for COVID-19 as well as other diseases like the cold or the flu. Walk or bike instead or if you’re going to one of the boroughs, try the ferry!
Sharing Utensils on Dates
It’s very cute and romantic to eat off the same fork as your date. But for early dates when you’re just getting to know each other, this is risky. The person could be recovering from a cold. He/she might not display symptoms, but they can still shed the virus. So, at the end of your candlelit dinner, ask for two forks for the dessert. And by the way, sharing utensils with a large group of people is also a big no-no. Basically, make sure you keep your germs to yourself.
Not Washing Your Hands
Anytime you touch public objects like doorknobs, handles, railings, etc. you’re collecting bacteria that are growing on there. Most of the time, these microorganisms are harmless. Sometimes, these microorganisms can make you sick. So before you grab that sandwich with both hands and chow down, wash them with soap and water. If you don’t have access to a sink, hand sanitizer will work, but it’s still best to eat your food with a fork. Perhaps this is why New Yorkers have perfected the “fold the pizza in half and eat it while you walk” trick. You’re only touching the edges of the crust (which you can throw out) and you get to walk and eat without a fork.
