US To Punish Uganda For Criminalising Homosexuality
Following the passage of the anti-gay measure on Monday, the United States declared that it would be cutting off vital services and aid to Uganda. President Joe Biden of the United States issued a statement denouncing the decision, calling it a “gross violation of human rights” and demanding the law be overturned.
President Biden has said, “I join with people around the world, including many in Uganda, in calling for its immediate repeal.” President Biden elaborated, saying that the Act posed a danger to everyone in Uganda, not just Americans.
His declaration that he has asked the National Security Council to review significant US aid to the nation will have a negative impact on many Ugandans.
As a result, he said, “I have directed my National Security Council to evaluate the implications of this law on all aspects of U.S. engagement with Uganda, including our ability to safely deliver services under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other forms of assistance and investments.”
Also, “my administration will also incorporate the impacts of the law into our review of Uganda’s eligibility for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA),” he said.
President Biden added that penalties and entry restrictions were being considered by his administration. Those who helped make homo$exuality illegal or who discriminated against the LGBTQ+ community will be held accountable. The president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, signed the bill into law in March, but it was sent back to be revised. In April, Museveni sent the bill back to Parliament with a message requesting that only same-$ex offenses be criminalized.
On May 2, changes were made to the original draft that would have required people to report gay acts just because they identified as such.
Life in jail awaits anybody found guilty of violating the law’s new, narrower definition of “homo$exual acts.”
The death sentence is included in the contentious law’s list of prescribed punishments for serious crimes such as $exual assault on a juvenile, a disabled person, or a victim sick with a fatal disease.
The general public will be obligated to report incidents of child or other vulnerable person abuse committed by homo$exuals to the appropriate authorities. No one should ever have to worry about being murdered or treated unfairly because of who they are or where they come from. The US President then chimed in, “That is wrong.”
Biden praised the collaboration between Uganda and the United States, saying that the Western country has had a positive effect on the lives of millions of Ugandans. He talked about how US programs have boosted GDP, attracted more investment, and bolstered trade ties. To further “our common agenda,” he stated, “the United States government invests nearly $1 billion” (Sh138,450,000,000) (Sh3,738,815,000,000 UGX) each year in Uganda’s people, businesses, institutions, and military.
Biden noted that this demonstrated the significance of the United States’ commitment to and confidence in the people of Uganda. “It is my sincere hope that we can continue to build on this progress together,” Biden added.
