WAEC must name and shame staff members who leaked WASSCE 2020 – GNAT President
The days of sacrificing the toil of WASSCE students and making them go through stress because their exams have been cancelled may be over. Madam Phillipa Larsen the current president of Ghana National Association of Teachers has cautioned WAEC to shelve the idea of canceling the exams papers which were leaked during the WASSCE 2020.
She minced no words when she said the examining body must deal first with its staff or persons who leaked the examination papers and not the students. Madam Phillipa Larsen was of the view that the blame should be laid squarely on WAEC.

The dreams and aspirations of students are shattered each year their results are withheld by WAEC as a result of the examining body suspecting that some students have gained some undue advantage ahead of or during the examination. Often nothing is done to the examination officers working within WAEC who are the first culprits.
The reality is that, if no officer at WAEC leaks an exam out the council, there would be no way that exams or paper will ever leak.
In 2019 for instance, WAEC withheld WASSCE results of 26,434 students for various degrees of malpractices, which included suspected leakages and or access to examination questions. This information was made known by WAEC however it has since then failed to name or reveal the number of its officers who were involved in leakages.
The body is also yet to officially update the general public as to how many of the 26,434 students whose results well withheld in 2019 for instance have been released one year after and what the outstanding issues exist.
In its 2019 result release statement, it said, “The withheld results of candidates will be cancelled if found culpable, or released if otherwise.” To date, no one has been able to ascertain how many of the 14.12 percent of the 346,094 in 2019 got their results after the investigations.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Nnawotwi Yi, Madam Larsen emphatically said if the examining body fails to name its staff involved in the leakage of exams papers from the strong room, then it must not cancel any of the subjects written by the WASSCE 2020 candidates.
“Until we name and shame the persons involved in leaking the papers, nobody should touch the students’ papers, because they did not set the questions, its not their fault,” she posited.
During the interview, she debunked assertions that some teachers were part of the individuals who leaked the exam questions sometimes.
She posited that “Allegations that teachers provide answers to students during WASSCE examinations are untrue, no evidence about the claims have been made available to me and I know teachers will not do that because it’s against our code of conduct,”
She further called on for an independent regulatory body to be put in place to monitor the examining body and its activities.
Should students complete the examination ahead of the release of the findings of its investigations, it may be impossible to call students back to school to take leaked examination papers.
The WAEC is in a state of confusion as to what to do next as investigations are still ongoing.
