What is the Difference Between Prescription and OTC Drugs?
Ever wonder what the difference is between prescription and OTC drugs? Well, OTC stands for over-the-counter. These are things like Advil, Tylenol, and Benadryl. You don’t need a doctor’s permission to purchase and use them. These types of drugs are regulated and reviewed by the FDA, but the regulations aren’t as strict as prescription drugs.

More about OTC drugs
OTC drugs aren’t aimed at an individual’s specific condition. So, many OTC drugs treat general symptoms, such as pain, coughing, sneezing, and a runny nose. You’ll find cold/flu drugs in this category as well as allergy pills, nasal sprays, pain killers, fever reducers, and antacids for heartburn.
You should follow the directions on the box so you know how much to take. Many of these drugs can cause serious health issues if you take too much of them. For example, Tylenol can cause severe liver damage if you take too much or you’re taking it while drinking alcohol. The warnings for OTC drugs are listed on the packaging along with the directions.
What are prescription drugs?
Prescription drugs have stricter regulations than OTC drugs. You will need to see a doctor to have a consultation before receiving a prescription. Dosage matters and how long you take the drug matters as well. These are things that only your doctor will know and it’s an individual thing. Drugs that fall under the category of prescription drugs include antibiotics, opiates, Epi-pens, and birth control pills.
Which one is for you? Prescription or OTC Drugs?
If you’re not sure if you should be taking OTC drugs or getting a prescription from your doctor, it’s best to call for a consult. Your doctor can recommend a different OTC drug or write you a prescription. Oftentimes, you’ll need to go into the office for an examination before your doctor will actually write the prescription.
