Latest Education News Update: Free SHS will be cancelled if E-levy is not approved – Govt official
Mr Thomas Kusi Boafi, the Chief Executive Officer of Public Sector Reforms Secretariat following the rejection of the controversial E-levy by the opposition says Free SHS will be terminated if Ghanaians refuse to pay the MoMo tax.
In an interview monitored by EducationWeb.com.gh, the leading member of the Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) said the mobile money tax when approved will increase the revenue for the funding of the popular programme.
He told Kessben FM the low government revenue mobilization has created a huge fiscal deficit and until the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) is passed, this year’s BECE candidates risk the chance of benefitting the free school policy.
“So, Ghanaians must make a choice; we don’t like free education, stop employing our children, don’t increase wages and salary, we’ll have to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for assistance if the e-levy is not passed,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has said About 1.39 million students are expected to benefit from the Free Senior High School and Technical Vocational and Education Training (Free SHS/TVET) this year.
