WATCH VIDEO: School Feeding Caterers In Ashanti Region Strike Due To Unpaid Debts
As a result of outstanding debts, caterers for the Ashanti Region’s national school feeding program have suspended their services. Despite repeated requests for back pay, the caterers claim the government has disregarded them. They’re also lobbying for a doubling of the feeding grant from GHC 0.97 to GHC3 per child.
There’s no mystery about our decision. “The government didn’t pay us in full for the food we prepared during COVID-19,” a caterer who asked not to be named told Asaase News. Since that time, we have continued to express our displeasure without purpose. After three semesters of providing food for students, we are still waiting for payment in full.
A second caterer remarked, “We’ve been fighting for days.” Colleagues are passing away. We can’t afford to feed the kids on what they’re offering, and the banks are after them. It’s not right that you do this.
Even another food provider lamented, “We miss Otiko Afisa.” Everyone will be aware that school feeding is 15 days behind because she could pay for 40 days when she was there and let us know that she will pay for the remaining 10 or 15 days. Unfortunately, no one has updated us since Cynthia Morrison and the others took charge.
Protesting began in the Regional School Feeding Secretariat, where it was initiated by caterers. To deliver their petition to regional minister Simon Osei-Mensah, they marched to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council.
When calling for calm, the minister turned his back on the demonstrators because he was upset by the caterers’ response. Osei-Mensah had a discussion with the food providers.
“Would you be pleased if your kid came to you with chants to ask for a favor?” Osei-Mensah said to the offended caterers, “You merely brought a petition; why don’t you go ahead?”
We came here [to the RCC] because we’re so frustrated that we wanted the minister to step in and help us, but he didn’t. We are not pleased with the minister’s behavior. It was possible for him to have heard us. “This is really unusual, to put it mildly,” one of the caterers snapped.
The regional minister’s assistant, Gloria Temmah Gambrah, eventually accepted the plea on his behalf. Before they can return to work, caterers are waiting for the third-semester arrears from the previous school year to be paid. If any of their coworkers decide to go against their decision, they have threatened to toss away their lunches. The caterers’ strike happens just one day before classes at elementary schools restart. Concerns have been raised that this change could have an adverse effect on education.
