The NGO suggested that the government should come out with a hand book that contain the procedures and all relevant protocols for schools. The COVID-19 School management Manuel account to the think-tank should be used as a training guide ahead of school re-opening for teachers and school managers.
They also put forth that the MOE/GES endeavour to consider harmonizing Free SHS admission system as well as its re-entry policy so that the various heads can re-admit students including girls who were put in a family way and are returning after delivery. The think-tank also called for a vigorous campaign to help mobilize girls for re-enrollment as part of the governments’ school Reopening preparation.
They called for the provision of sick bays in every secondary school and every school should have a health personnel attached to it whiles the needed PPEs and other logistics are made available.
To increase access to water and hand washing facilities, the Africa Education Watch called on the MoE and GES to increase the quantity of Veronica buckets in the schools.
Schools across the world have had to close down again after covid-19 cases were recorded. The group suggested that, the GES must indicate covid-19 tolerant levels above which decisions on whether to close a schools can be taken on a school by school basis.
It also emphasized on the production and display of essential visuals on COVID-19 in schools for communication and reinforcement of information.
The Africa Education Watch believes that, the Committee on School Re-opening is not representative enough and that, other stakeholders such as teacher unions must be included.
The Committee set up to deliberate on modalities for school re-opening are expected to make their recommendations known to the Minister of Education Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh by 21st September 2020 for on ward communication to the President H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo.
