Reaction As South Africans Protest Uganda Law Criminalising LGBTQ Identity

On Friday, March 31, residents of Pretoria and Cape Town in South Africa took to the streets to protest a law approved in Uganda last week that makes it a crime to be openly homosexual. Demonstrators urged President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda not to sign the document while singing and waving flags.
Even though Uganda is one of more than 30 African countries that have banned same-sex interactions, Human Rights Watch claims that this new law would be the first to criminalize the mere fact of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ).
About a hundred people protested outside the United Nations Information Centre in Pretoria, including Ugandan LGBTQ rights activists and photographer Papa De DeLovie Kwagala. He argued that “world leaders should put pressure on Museveni to not sign the bill because it is not only a Ugandan issue, it is an African continent issue. “While the LGBTQ community has no obligation to anyone, it should be afforded the same opportunities as everyone else.” None of our protections can be taken away. “There is a global crisis.”
Check out some online reactions.
Erugu Peter: Uganda leads the way, Ghana is next, Tanzania is coming, and President William Samoei Ruto has declared that marriage should be between a man and a woman.East African Community Spirit
Dickson: Can you demonstrate in any Arab country for not allowing gays? You dare not. If Uganda is going to pass a law against this practice, all LGBTQ people can relocate to any African country that allows their practice. It’s not by force that all countries must allow the LGBTQ
Stephen: You think Uganda is in South Africa? Give them asylum in your country, and do all your evil there. Jesus is in control, and every knee must bow to confess that he is Lord indeed. Amen.
Umah: Uganda will never lose its title as the “pearl of Africa” because of the west. Few may die in Uganda, but generations and African culture have saved it. We know what is good and what is wrong.
Mossy: South Africa lost its culture because of many years of white rule; that’s why homosexuality, murder, and drug addiction are common in South Africa. It’s a dangerous place to live. They have nothing to teach Uganda, the pearl of Africa.
Ajdent: I thought South Africa was in Africa. My goodness, what happened to African culture in South Africa!?! In Africa, that thing is an abomination, not recognized anywhere in Africa.
Bendy: Come and demonstrate here in Uganda. We will show Yu the power of mob justice. Stick to your country and leave Uganda alone. I wonder how these people do it. Just constipation can make someone cry from the toilet; how about genital access from there? That’s ridiculous; it must be so painful rather than enjoyable. that’s why they end up in pampers.
