SAD: Chimpanzee Snatches A Baby From A Woman And Kills It
A chimpanzee assaulted a two-month-old girl and killed her in Kagadi. Aroho Ahumuza, a resident of Karuswiga central cell in Muhorro town council, was identified as the victim. Her father is Kunihira Kasaija.
On Monday night, as the child was being carried by her mother, she was assaulted by a chimpanzee. While Ahumuza’s back was turned, a chimpanzee came from the neighboring shrubbery, grabbed the infant from her, and rushed back into the woods.
She raised the alarm, and the locals came out to chase after the chimp. After inflicting terrible injuries to the child’s head, mouth, and chest, the chimpanzee discarded her in the adjacent jungle, as the locals would later discover.
According to Kasaija, emergency medical services were called, and the infant was taken to the Kagadi Community Health Center, but she was confirmed dead there a few hours later.
He has asked that the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) take action to remove the chimpanzees from the area and provide him with financial compensation for the loss of his child. Dr. Julius Birungi of Kagadi Community Health said the child’s injuries were significant, and he recommended sending the youngster to Mulago for additional treatment, but the parent lacked the funds to get their child there. To decrease incidents of human-wildlife conflict, Birungi has urged UWA to remove chimpanzees from the Muhorro Town Council territory.
Locals have accused UWA of doing nothing to stop the recurring chimpanzee attacks. After repeated requests, UWA has done nothing to stop the animals from causing chaos in the neighborhood. Muhorro local Byonabye Kayiru expressed regret that UWA gives wild animals priority over human life in the face of tragedy.
Another local, Joseph Kyalisiima, claimed that UWA personnel are quite relaxed about keeping the animals within the designated areas and that they often fail to take swift action when informed of an animal invasion.
Plans are in the works to prevent animal incursions, according to Wilson Amanyirwe, the head of the UWA in the Bunyoro sub-region. He has however challenged the public to stop abusing and scaring the animals whenever they stray into town and instead warn them on time.
There has been a recent upsurge in chimpanzee attacks on humans in the area.
In June 2022, a chimpanzee assaulted and injured a little kid named Mugabe Bikahwa, a resident of Karuswiga central cell in the Muhorro town council. The boy was attacked by the chimpanzee as he and a group of women and children were returning from a trip to the water well.
